I’ll say this much about DC Comics: If they spot a good idea that isn’t in comic book form already, they’re quick to pounce on it. Just take a look at DC Bombshells, a comic book series starring classic super-heroines reimagined in World War II themes as they punch undead Nazis right in their stupid rotting faces. It’s a fun series with fantastic art to back up the lunacy, and it was all inspired by a series of limited edition statues.
DC is dipping back into its collectibles for another new series, this time based on the Gotham City Garage inaction figures. Here’s the lowdown on this crazy tale: Lex Luthor is in charge of Gotham City, thanks to a project that saw the City renamed to “The Garden”. Everything is hunky dory and keeping secrets is frowned upon…by an ever-present security team led by Batman. Even worse? If you want in, you’ve got to pledge loyalty to Luthor and hop into the LEXES tech that creates a hive-mind for the citizenship.
Needless to say, defiance isn’t exactly running rampant. Until secret Kryptonian Kara Gordon finds herself exiled from the Garden and decides to fight back from beyond the wastelands with a team that includes Big Barda, Hawkgirl and Wonder Woman. Speaking to Comicosity, Gotham City Garage co-writer Collin Kelly described the series as “an anti-fascist anthem for the open road.”
We’re bringing Big Barda, Steel, Catwoman, Harley Quinn, Silver Banshee, Hawkgirl and the first Kryptonian this world has ever seen—the mysterious girl named Kara Gordon—into a world of bikes, outlaws and elaborate tattoos.
Jackson Lanzing joins Kelly in the side-car for the writing gig on this story, which also features a rotating cast of artists. Brian Ching handles art duties on the first issue, which already looks like the biker culture of Akira had a baby with the wasteland of Mad Max. I dig it. Gotham City Garage revs into gear on August 16 with digital issues out first and printed collections beginning in October.
