Destiny’s new microtransactions are coining it

Destiny-silver

Destiny, a video game where you can perform Michael Jackson’s Thriller dance before a gigantic space-Satan in another dimension outside of time, appears to be off to a good start now that microtransactions have been introduced to the latest iteration of the game.

Right now, that in-game currency of Silver which can be bought with real-world cash is trending pretty high on the PlayStation charts. In fact, the only thing outselling all that Silver, is the Taken King expansion itself.

That’s according to a chart on the PlayStation store spotted by GameInformer, which revealed that the $10 care package of 1100 Silver coins, ahead of the 2300 Silver ($20) and 500 Silver ($5) options in the PlayStation top five.

How much cash is flowing into the Bungie and Activision coffers from these microtransactions is unclear right now, but expect more details to be revealed when the publisher has its earnings briefing this week. Right now, I’d take an educated guess and say that these Silver packages are most likely earning between “quite a bit” and “a lot” of cash right now, as the Xbox sales haven’t even been accounted for yet.

Man, business economics is easy.

Anyway, Silver pretty much buys you cosmetic fluff in Destiny right now, along the lines of fly dance moves and emotions. And there’s nothing wrong with that, nor is it hardly new. I’m just dreading the possibility of this system ever being used for more tangible benefits in Destiny, which would break the game for me.

Hell, I’d be surprised for a game to actually omit microtransactions these days. But at least it’s better than Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain’s microtransaction nonsense, which had Konami scraping the barrel of good taste with insurance schemes.

I dunno. Already spent more than a R1000 on this game. I’ve got other games I want to play and spending R200 or more on silver just wont work on the budget I have. Plus my backlog is killing me and I’ve yet to pick up COD and Fallout this month

My backlog is just as big… Blood EFFING Borne has me farming like a madman, TW3:HOS I haven’t even started, DA:I simply ran through the tutorial still need to finish God Of War…and then Fallout 4… I’d recommend fly fishing for the Cod though….

That would make COD a decent game though

Hehe, depends… If you hook yourself in the ear you’ll have a longer tail to tell than COD….

          Edit: I’m not awake yet… *tale…

I’m struggling with the decision as to when to start playing DA:I, I’ll probably start after I’ve played Fallout 4, but then again, I might be tired of RPGs by then…

Here is a wild idea. First play through your backlog. After a year (or 365 days, whichever comes first) get Fallout 4 on special. Then take some money, and take your wife out on a proper date. Then tell her: “Honey, I gave up Fallout 4 for this date with you.” She will love you long time!

Online friends want to shoot zombies and play the co-op. I said I would oblige. We’re all getting a little tired of Destiny

So… your online buddies is more important than your wife? Or wait? Are you one of those who will remain single for the rest of his life?

Not as wrong as “I’d rather shoot zombies with my online friends than spend some quality time with my wife.”

            Did you just “Quote” yourself?

“I’d rather shoot zombies with my online friends than spend some quality time with my wife.”

Your poor wife… also I don’t buy the whole “my online friends” thing Dutch, we know you!

It’s like the console says, please insert Destiny disc, thank you now please remove game disc and insert credit card before continuing, micro-transactions for virtual items, not a fan.

While I’m happy that they’ve introduced Eververse in favor of releasing free DLC… Before I start praising it I want to see the caliber of the content we see next. The whole point of MTs was to make the new content free and now that burnout has finally hit me (FINALLY! Well played TTK…) I only really log in for Xur or Dailies to get exotics I don’t have yet now. Didnt even raid this weekend, sat playing Borderlands with my raid teamies instead.
