Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

Director Joss Whedon spoke to Empire about making Marvel’s The Avengers, and in the interview he reveals what his biggest hurdle was when writing the script: Too many characters.

“It was an up-all-month job. Finding the characters’ voices was not only easy, but glorious fun. It doesn’t suck to write Tony Stark, yet finding the structure was just brutal. I haven’t had that much trouble making a screenplay work since Serenity and, embarrassingly, for the exact same reason: there’s just too many characters.”

Just yesterday, I was having this very same discussion with somebody, and now it seems like GeekTyrant have gone all Inceptiony on me, as they have written an article on 5 Reasons why The Shadow is the best worst superhero movie ever

There’s a new poster out for John Cusack’s The Raven. The horror/thriller tells of the last days of real life author Edgar Allen Poe’s life, as he is asked to help track down a killer that is copying killing’s from Poe’s books. (No, I couldn’t keep a straight face either when writing the last 2 words of the previous sentence)

Billionaire heiress and head of Annapurna Productions – the current rights holders of the Terminator franchise – has revealed via Twitter that the next film in the series will not be PG-13 like McG’s Terminator: Salvation, but returning to it’s hardcore roots:

“@MeganEllison: We can’t really tell you guys anything about Terminator BUT it will be an R rated film as God and James Cameron intended.”

Evangeline Lilly spoke to Entertainment Weekly about her role as the elf, Tauriel, in Peter Jackson’s much anticipated adaption of The Hobbit:

Yes, she is a warrior. She’s actually the head of the Elven guard. She’s the big shot in the army. So she knows how to wield any weapon, but the primary weapons that she uses are a bow and arrow and two daggers. And she’s lethal and deadly. You definitely wouldn’t want to be caught in a dark alley next to Tauriel.

She’s not in the first film very much. She comes into the first film near the end, and has a very small part to play. Her role in the second film is much more involved. Although, I have to say, when I first read the scripts and took the job, she had a lot less going on in the second film. I think the role is becoming a bit more demanding that I had expected it to be. There’s a lot more for me to do now, which is a lot of fun, but it’s a little more pressure.”

There’s a new TV spot out for Wrath of the Titans, the sequel to 2010’s remake Clash of the Titans. The first film certainly wasn’t horrible, but it could have been so much better. Everything I’ve seen so far of Wrath seems to indicate that this actually might be the movie I’ve been waiting to see. Let’s pray to Zeus that they don’t stuff it up

And finally we end on a story that’s taking place in the other big movie industry. A new law has been signed in by Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, which makes it mandatory for all actors in adult films filmed in LA to make use of a condom from now on. This is on top of the existing law that makes it compulsory for all actors/actresses to undergo HIV testing every 30 days.

The porn industry is not happy about this new law at all and this could lead to them moving shop outside of the county. Seeing as 90% of the porn made in the USA comes out of LA, this could have a major financial impact on the area.

This new law will require that all LA porn filmmakers pay a still-to-be-determined monthly fee, and that this money will then be used to pay officials who will perform spot-checks on film sets. Michael Weinstein, president of the Aids Healthcare Foundation – which was the main driving force behind this law – has indicated that ideally these spot checks will be performed by public health officials.

I don’t care how well trained or professional those health care officials may be, I don’t think anything is going to be able to prepare them for the first day on the job. “Excuse me, LA Health Board. I’m here to check up on whe- Oh… Oh my… I don’t think that’s supposed to go- Oh my god, she’s having an epileptic seizure! Code blue!! Code blue!!”

Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to go fill out this application form for an internship at the Los Angeles County Medical Services.
