Are the NINJA TURTLES going to be TEENAGE MUTANTS again? Plus new writer jumps on board

When the news first broke that there would be a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie directed by Jonathan Liebesman and produced by Michael Bay, there were mixed reactions. However when a horrible sounding draft of the script leaked online, revealing that the turtles were now aliens and that the title would now just be Ninja Turtles, there was really only one reaction. I believe hip hop star Li’l Wayne said it best: “WWWWWWWHHHHHHAT?”

But there’s been recent talk that the script has gone back to the drawing board, and it looks they may just have decided to put back some adjectives while they were at it.

TMNT-Teenage-Mutant-Ninja-Turtles-movie-live-action-1

Ninja Turtles officially began shooting about two weeks ago, and while we’ve had plenty of casting news lately, we haven’t seen a single thing from the film itself. But over the weekend at CinemaCon, a logo for the film was spotted during the Paramount presentation and according to TMNTLair it was very much like the classic 80’s cartoon logo and clearly read “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”.

Now either the marketing folks were getting their 4/20 on and decided that instead of creating something new, they’d just use the old titles and logos, or Bay and co have actually listened to fans and changed it accordingly. But if the title has the “Teenage Mutant” part back, does the reworked script as well?

Well, that question should apparently be directed to writer Evan Daugherty (Snow White and the Huntsman, plus the upcoming Divergent and Killing Season) who has apparently been brought on board for a new rewrite of Josh Applebaum and Andre Nemec’s original script. And with that rewrite, it could be that Paramount is hoping to not piss off fans, which is always a good place to start.

Adding even more weight to that theory is this interview that Smallville star Alan Ritchson, who will be playing (using motion-capture) Raphael, recently did at the MTV movie awards. He talks about the technical aspects behind the motion-capture, but also defends the film against the criticism of so called fans, saying that everything we assume we know and everything we’ve “read online is wrong”.

Now you can’t deny Ritchson’s enthusiasm and verve for the role, but he wouldn’t be the first actor/filmmaker to tell you with a smile on his face that his stinky turd of a film will be amazing when he full well knows it isn’t. That being said, I am intrigued by previous claims that the film’s action sequences have been heavily influenced by Indonesian ass-kickathon, The Raid, and that by previous claims from Liebesman that everything they’re doing now completely fits into the existing mythology.

With the film’s June 6, 2014 release date still a long way off, it will still be some time before we learn if the movie will be “Cowabunga!”or cow dung.

The IMDB summary reads: “Aliens invade Earth and inadvertently spawn a quartet of mutated reptile warriors, the Ninja Turtles, who rise up against them to defend the world.” Still, I don’t care where they are from. But I am miffed that Shredder isn’t in it…
