Awards season is underway – Golden Globe nominations have been announced

It’s award season time and as much as I have my reservations at the whole marketing and popularity contest that plays out in the movie industry during this time, it is still a good time to have a look at the best performances of the year and especially for South Africans as we tend to get the movies later than our US counterparts – what movies should we look out and watch in 2017.

And so without further ado, below is the full list of Golden Globe nominations, starting with the TV series categories before getting into the real stuff, so that you are forced to read through the whole list [insert evil laugh here]:

So, what do you make of the list? Any surprises or snubs that got your attention. Deadpool got nominated which is great and I was surprised by the nominations for the film Lion which has been going a little under the radar.  Also, Mel Gibson is back as a director – can’t say I am unhappy about that. Though I did think the likes of Queen of Katwe or Arrival would get more love than they did (Katwe wasn’t even nominated). And on the TV front its good to see Stranger Things and Westworld both get nominated and go head to head against each other.

It’s difficult for me to comment on many of these film as I haven’t seen them, but we are going to get chances to catch up in January and so will hopefully be able to provide our thoughts on potential award contenders and who is likely to win then. In the end La La Land got the most nominations (7), which makes me want to see this musical even more, despite my fear of musicals.

One thing that is certain is the Meryl Streep will win a Golden Globe next year. This shouldn’t be a surprise really, but the actress is receiving the Cecille B. DeMille lifetime achievement award for her rick body of work. Quite frankly she has enough nominations and awards for a few lifetimes, so I wouldn’t be surprised if she foes on to win this award again in future.

The Golden Globes Award ceremony itself will be held on January 8th 2017 – so we won’t need to wait long to know who will be winning these awards, which will also serve as a precursor to the announcement of the Academy Awards themselves.
