Power Rangers (2)

Dudes…Power Rangers was good. Like, surprisingly good. I sat down with cautious optimism on Saturday night to see some morphin’ on the big screen, and 90 minutes later was pumping my fist in the air when the Rangers finally assembled and a certain iconic guitar riff made its sonic presence known. It’s not a perfect movie, but sweet Lord Zedd is it an enjoyable romp through nostalgia and Elizabeth Banks absolutely stealing all of the scenes she popped up in. KRISPY KREME? IT MUST BE OF GREAT POWER!

As much as I’d love to see Rita get her own solo movie, there’re a few sequels to romp through before we can start talking spin-offs. Power Rangers 2 is most likely already greenlit, an apt term that’ll introduce the team’s greatest nemesis and eventual ally, the Green Ranger. A role originally played by Jason Frank in the Mighty Morphin’ series of the 90s that I’m no longer embarrassed to show my love for, the Green Ranger commands the mighty Dragon Zord and was created by Rita Repulsa herself.

Frank would eventually become the White Ranger and defacto leader of the team, but the Green Ranger is still a fond memory of Tommy Oliver at his best. Or her best if the cast of Power Rangers get some wish fulfilment. “A lot of the cast and I have discussed that we think it should be a girl. It makes it even: three girls, three boys,” Red Ranger Dacre Montgomery said to THR.

It’s left blank. It’s a cliff-hanger. Whoever you’re going to drop into that position — whether it’s a girl — it’s inevitably going to create drama. It’ll be interesting to drop that drama into it and see how we all relate to it and work with it.

“There’s a post-credits scene, so people should stay,” director Dean Israelite added.

It teased up the direction of what the next movie could be. For people that know the brand, it’s super exciting. There are so many ideas we’re kicking around in the direction of where the film leads you.

I’m game. If there’s one thing that Power Rangers excelled at, it was team dynamics. A very likable cast defending Angel Grove from a rampaging monster and Rita’s tendency to shove her thumbs into the mouths of random people. She’s weird, I love her give me a solo movie dammit. There’s been plenty of Green Rangers over the years, so as long as Israelite and the cast can find someone who they can connect with, I’d be game for a sequel with a new Tommy running around.

  1. I think it could work. Could be a really cool new dynamic… I still have actually watch the movie though, but I like this idea.
