Chris Evans talks CAPTAIN AMERICA: WINTER SOLDIER

With Thor off busy river dancing on some poor sod’s face and Tony Stark controlling ALL OF THE AMOURZ, it’s time to check in with the final member of Marvel’s trinity, everybody’s favourite shield throwing, flag wearing superhero, Captain America.

The man under the blue mask, Chris Evans, spoke to Collider about the upcoming sequel, his knowledge of the Winter Soldier story, and what ever happened to all those Captain America scenes left on Joss Whedon’s cutting room floor.

While any comic book fan worth his salt immediately knew what the second film would be about the moment that the “Winter Soldier” title suffix was revealed, how familiar was Evans with the story about Cap’s presumed dead WW2 partner Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) returning from the grave as a brainwashed, cyborg Soviet assassin?

“Oh, I am fully up to date with my comics.  I know all about it.  Kevin Feige was talking about [Winter Soldier] when we were filming the first Captain America and well before The Avengers.  During the first Captain America we were talking about potential futures and, you know, I don’t want to give too much way.”

While he was pretty reluctant about spilling plot specifics, he did reveal that a lot of the story elements that Joss Whedon eventually cut out of The Avengers – such as the dramatic scene of Cap going through old photo’s of his now deceased WW2 friends and contemplating whether to look up a still alive Peggy Carter – would be finding it’s way into the new movie.

“The most I am looking forward to is exploring a little bit of Steve’s…they had all those deleted scenes with The Avengers because a lot of those scenes are for Captain 2, you know what I mean?  It was good stuff, but it all felt like that was his story.  It is a different movie.  WithThe Avengers there was so much to cram in.  Like I said, it was a long movie anyway.  So I think making it any longer would have just been exhausting.”

“A lot of that stuff [that was cut] is for Captain America 2.  That is his story.  It is him trying to on a personal level adjust to the fact that everyone he knows is gone and the whole Peggy Carter of it all.  There are a lot of things that he kind of has to come to terms with.  So I don’t know.  I am excited to kind of see flashes of the first Captain, if you know what I mean, and to see his memory of what we now know as an audience of who he was.”

Evans also revealed that he wouldn’t be averse to exploiting the benefits of a shared universe by perhaps dropping in on his godly teammate Thor.

“[Chris] Hemsworth and I even talked about that.  I would love to do a little thing in Thor 2.  It is obviously going to be tricky trying to work out the plot, the reason why I am not there to help him, and why he is not there to help me.  But the best thing about Marvel is that, like I said, the movies were so good and we had such a good time making them.”

A Thor/Cap team-up, that actually formed an organic part of the narrative, would be pretty hard to shoehorn into Thor: The Dark World, seeing as how that film seems to be taking place almost entirely over in the magical realms of Asgard. That being said, it would be pretty cool though.

Production on Captain America: The Winter Soldier is scheduled to start in March of next year.

You know, not all of us read b-grade Marvel comics based on superheroes designed to wallop Hitler…

After getting the origins preamble out of the way and giving him some real action in Avengers, I’m actually keen to see the sequel.

B-Grade Marvel comics? It was one of the biggest comic stories of the year when it came out, both commercially and critically. Even made mainstream news outlets.

So yeah, I’d think it’s a safe bet that most comic book fanboys would have had knowledge about it, whether they read Marvel or not.

Perhaps, but prior to the movie Capt America was not really on the radar. Also, you seem to suggest that the only good comic book fan is one who reads Marvel or DC.

No, I didn’t. Most comic book fans, whether they love/hate the Big Two, follow industry news. And this was big industry news. In the comic world, the two characters that everybody always thought the “Dead is dead” rule actually applied to, was Uncle Ben from Spider-Man and Bucky from Captain America.

So Bucky’s return made headlines due to how much the concept incited some readers initially, then made even more headlines when it turned out that the story was actually bloody incredible.
Most comic book readers would have heard of this.

Slightly off topic, but I get the feeling that you assume I’m a Marvel fanboy, when the truth is I’m definitely not. My favourite publisher is definitely Image, and I’ve read far more of their books than either Marvel or DC in the last 2 years. Hell, except for a small smattering of their biggest titles, I’m not even really reading much Marvel anymore.
But this is a movie news site, and right now Marvel and DC (well, mainly Marvel) are the ones that are making comic book movies, so they’re the ones who get mentioned.

I think you are confusing the difference between a comic fan and a fanboy. The former reads comics, not the news about comics.
