In case you didn’t get the memo, SyFy are doing sci-fi again. And the flagship title leading the US TV network’s return to their genre roots is The Expanse, a big budget, flashy looking space opera based on James S.A. Corey’s incredible book series of the same name. SyFy is hoping to use it to recapture their glory days of Battlestar Galactica, and while The Expanse is not quite there yet, it’s definitely getting close judging by the great reception it received from fans during its panel at this weekend past’s Comic-Con.

The first season of the show – which introduced us to characters livingin in a future 200 years from now when mankind has colonized the solar system but also split off into 3 different factions on the brink of war – wrapped up earlier in the year, leaving its characters in a precarious state. Detective Joe Miller (Thomas Jane) and Jim Holden (Steven Strait) and his crew of the Rocinante, having followed the clues of their respective mysteries surround the disappearance of Julie Mao and the alien-like protomolecule, barely made it out of the horrors of Eros station alive. And according to showrunner Naren Shankar (Farscape), that’s exactly where the story picks up in season two… kinda (via EW):

Yes, and no would be a way to answer that, I guess. It’s pretty quick after the last scene of season 1, is where we’re starting. We have our guys on the Roci fleeing Eros, and Miller and Holden have been heavily irradiated. So we’re picking up pretty quickly after that. We’re about two-thirds of the way through [first book in the series] Leviathan Wakes. So, there’s still plenty of that book to be done, and we are picking up at that point. There’s a lot of big events that happen subsequent to the guys leaving Eros in the book, and that is definitely the first chunk of the second season, so we’re picking up the scene after that.

And it’s really about the understanding and discovery of what has happened on Eros station. There is a massive battle to attack the mysterious place where all of the information from the Eros experiment is being beamed to that the guys kind of caught wind of at the very end of episode 10. So that’s the big first movement for season 2, and if you’ve read the book, you know where these things culminate — the launch of the Nauvoo, the mission to Eros, and everything that happens after that.

Now I’m not going to spoil it for those folks who haven’t read “Leviathan Wakes”, but Miller gets involved in some of the craziest aspects of this story. And Shankar is pretty excited to show them off.

Miller is a huge part of season 2, and as you’ll find in [the second book] Caliban’s War, as the series goes forward, these are momentous, momentous episodes for Miller. I think people are going to be pretty wowed and blown away with how intense and how beautiful it is. The mission to Eros and Miller going inside and what he finds with the protomolecule-transformed version of that station — we’re filming it right now, actually — it’s going to be pretty amazing. And everybody is just pulling out all the stops. And I can’t wait to see it onscreen.

Well, we already got to see a glimpse of it onscreen as during the Comic-Con panel, the first season 2 teaser trailer was released. Check it out below.

If you who have read the books like me, then you would know that the Polynesian looking young lady in the body armour is gunnery sergeant Roberta “Bobbie” Draper, one seriously badass Martian marine who is going to play a big role in the upcoming events. Now I originally had some issues with the casting of Wes Chatham as Amos, as I really don’t think him big enough to fit the description of the character in the books. And he really isn’t, even though I did come to like the smaller, more aggro TV version we got. I was afraid we would see the same type of casting mismatch happening for Bobbie though, who is supposed to have the type of bodybuild that makes Amazons jealous. But while it’s hard to definitively tell from this very short footage, 6ft tall actress Frankie Adams looks like she just might do the job.

The Expanse is set to premiere its second season on SyFy in early 2017.

Love The Expanse. The reason why it is so good is that we can relate to the characters. It is also a “probable” if we did colonise outer space, what would happen thing.
