Conspiracy Theory Tuesday – Did Loki win after all in The Avengers?

I think by now, it’s pretty clear that we all loved the Avengers film that came out last year. It would also explain why a shirtless Kervyn who happens to be coated in green paint regularly smashes through my office to throw me around like rag doll every Monday morning.

The big bad in that film, Loki, brought a world of hurt down on Earth’s mightiest heroes. In the end though, he was swiftly defeated with a barrage of arrows, patriotism and gamma irradiated WWE finishing moves, ready for a lift back to good ol’ Asgard. But what if that had been his intent all along?

Let’s take a look at Loki first. He’s not a true Asgardian, is petty, part frost giant and wrapped up in an egotistical intellect of lies and schemes. He’s the trickster god, and when it comes to mischief, misdirection is a key element here.

And all his scheming, invading Earth, bringing an army with him and allying himself with a cosmic tyrant, what could it have all been for? Quite simply, a gauntlet. But not just any armoured glove. Loki has his eyes on the Infinity Gauntlet,a weapon so powerful when fully charged, that it wiped out half of all life in the universe with a single swipe, back in a classic comic book arc. And we’ve already seen the Infinity Gauntlet, sitting pretty way back in the very first Thor movie.

And considering that Odin in all his wisdom left the Casket of Winters, a weapon capable of throwing down an ice age on anyone in front of it, in a very open location, it’s amazing that he has yet to secure the Infinity Gauntlet. So why did Loki go through all that effort then?

Within the Avengers film, it’s clear that he has very little regard for our planet. He considers us to be nothing more than ants, a fact that he openly expresses throughout the movie. He doesn’t want an Earth that is a flaming crater after the Skrulls are done with it.

He wants Asgard. And who can blame him? Asgard kicks ass, and is a paradise of weird technology and macho artistic design. And in the first Thor film, he briefly assumed control of the throne. And he wants it back. Problem is, with Odin back, and Thor watching him, Loki doesn’t have the muscle to coup de tat his way back onto that seat. But with the aid of Thanos, and the Infinity Gauntlet, he could rule the entire universe.

And his plan worked perfectly. Loki played everyone thanks to his silver tongue, and you can just see the triumphant glare in his eyes when Thor takes him back. Either that, or Balck Widow was tickling him from behind. If this is what Joss Whedon has in mind for the sequels, then Asgardian-damn son. Well played sir, well played.

By winning, the Avengers may have lost. And with a part to play in the upcoming second Thor film, we may yet see this scheme unravel even further as Loki makes his move.

  1. Ohhhh, this would rock hard. I don’t get though, why would he have not taken the Infinity Gauntlet when he had access to in in Thor, and when the Protector was sent down to Earth?

Maybe he did not know what it was back then! This all sounds very plausible!
