By now you’ve probably heard of Hardcore Henry, the movie shot entirely from the point of view of the main character. It’s the strangest blend of action movie and first-person video game and I’ll be honest, I’m sceptical about this. I loved the original music video that inspired the idea, but a whole movie? Besides for the inevitable motion sickness, having a silent protagonist for the entire film is a very bold move.

However, as more news and reviews break about Hardcore Henry it looks like this bold move might be paying off. I don’t want to tell you to get hyped, but it’s started getting some very positive feedback, as you’ll see from some of the quotes featured in the new trailer.

Strap in. Hardcore Henry is one of the most unflinchingly original wild-rides to hit the big screen in a long time: You remember nothing. Mainly because you’ve just been brought back from the dead by your wife (Haley Bennett). She tells you that your name is Henry. Five minutes later, you are being shot at, your wife has been kidnapped, and you should probably go get her back. Who’s got her? His name’s Akan (Danila Kozlovsky); he’s a powerful warlord with an army of mercenaries, and a plan for world domination. You’re also in an unfamiliar city of Moscow, and everyone wants you dead. Everyone except for a mysterious British fellow called Jimmy (Sharlto Copley). He may be on your side, but you aren’t sure. If you can survive the insanity, and solve the mystery, you might just discover your purpose and the truth behind your identity. Good luck, Henry. You’re likely going to need it…

In case that all went by to frantically for you and you had your heart in your mouth the entire time like I did, here’s what the critics are saying: “a revolutionary movie experience”, “a mix of Bourne, Captain America and Call of Duty” and my personal favourite, “it’s like The Raid and Kingsman had a really f’d up baby”. So maybe you can get a little bit hyped. Just remember to take your Valoid.

Written and directed by Ilya Naishuller and produced by Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted, Night Watch), Hardcore Henry stars Sharlto Copley and a bunch of other people I don’t recognise, and apparently Gordon Freeman. It opens in the US on April 8th, no word on a South African release date yet.
