Dracula Year Zero returns from the grave

You might find this hard to believe, but years ago, Vampires were actually threatening, blood-sucking monsters who didn’t sparkle or wear dubious amounts of hair gel.

The forefather of all those real vampires was Vlad the Impaler, or Count Dracula himself. He’s been immortalised on film and television in every single way that a public domain character can be, and now, it seems that film-makers want to once again visit the genesis of how the legendary Romanian conqueror became the King of Vampires.

Gary Shore has been hired to direct the origins of the first bloodsucker, after Alex Proyas ditched years of work to go and helm an adaptation of Paradise Lost instead.

Thanks to the short, stylised trailer for the planned martial arts extravaganza Cup of Tears, which is now being developed into a full length feature film by Universal Studios, Shore has had the attention of Hollywood, and has now been attached to the latest Dracula film.

Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless have written the most recent draft of the script, which reportedly goes back to the original Bram Stoker roots of the character, portraying him more as a tragically doomed figure who gives into darkness for more noteworthy reasons other than a desire to get away with drinking blood.

Sam Worthington was involved at one point, but with his current movie projects taking up most of his time, one can’t be too sure whether he’ll make it or not.

Still, beats anything that revolves around vampires sparkling, right?

Just to gripe, Vlad had pretty much nothing to do with Bram Stoker’s incarnation, other than an essay Stoker read about Transylvanian superstitions. He didn’t even create the concept of an aristocratic vampire. The rest Stoker padded from research – in his original notes the count wasn’t called Dracula.

So, in as much as we can rely on a fictional novel as fact, the whole premise for the above movie seems like bullshit. Unless they just intend to redo the book, in which case it’s simply another Dracula adaptation.
