Well colour me impressed. Early buzz for The Hunger Games is very positive

I’ve regaled you guys a few times with how I sort of stumbled onto reading Suzanne Collins’ Hunger Games books, and while expecting another Twilight debacle instead was greeted by an intense sci-fi story with good characters and exciting action. (Well, at least for the first book that is. Book 2 and 3 both won gold medals at the World Shark Jumping contest.)

But even with the high level of talent attached to the film adaptation of the first book, I have still just been cautiously optimistic, as there was an even higher chance of them messing it up in attempt to drag in the Twilight crowd.

Well, it looks like I may have been worried about nothing.

Lionsgate held an early invite-only press screening last week, but unfortunately strict NDA’s prevented anybody lucky enough to be at the screening from revealing anything about it. Well part of the NDA has now been lifted, meaning that those present are now allowed to talk about the film on social media but still not post any full length reviews.

Slashfilm, whose own Germain attended the screening, has compiled this collection of Tweets from those press that attended and the overall feeling is that director Gary Ross has managed to not only make a solid adaptation but a pretty exciting film as well:

I’ve loved pretty much everything I’ve seen Jennifer Lawrence in [insert hot bikini photo shoot joke here], so it’s good to hear that she is continuing her impressive streak.  Though I’d love to see more opinions from press who have not read the books (also press who do not refer to actress as J Law and proudly declare themselves to be on Team Anything!), I think it’s safe to say that my excitement levels have just jumped up a notch or two.

In a not-too-distant future, North America has collapsed, weakened by drought, fire, famine, and war to be replaced by Panem, a country divided into the Capitol and 12 districts. Each year two young representatives from each district are selected by lottery to participate in The Hunger Games. Part entertainment, part brutal intimidation of the subjugated districts, the televised games are broadcast throughout Panem. The 24 participants are forced to eliminate their competitors, literally, with all citizens required to watch. When 16-year-old Katniss’ young sister, Prim, is selected as the mining district’s female representative, Katniss volunteers to take her place. She and her male counterpart Peeta, will be pitted against bigger, stronger representatives who have trained for this their whole lives.

The Hunger Games gets released in the US on March 22nd, with a 13 April local release.

The worst part of all this is resisting the temptation to ARRRRR it up in those three weeks between international and local release.

At least the Twilight comparisons will stop. The BR ones will persist I reckon, even though Wil Wheaton has clearly stated they’re different and, as we all know, Wil Wheaton knows all.
