Few characters can stand up against the feistiness of Star Wars hero Han Solo, but Disney believes they may have found the person to do just that. And in a surprise move have recently announced (via StarWars.com) that Game of Throne’s Emilia Clarke will be joining the cast of the Han Solo movie.

I say surprise because it had been previously reported that Tessa Thompson, Zoe Kravitz, and Naomi Scott were among the actresses in line to play the female lead in the movie that is believed to be the love interest of our main character. However, Emilia Clarke’s name was not on the supposed shortlist for this role and so comes a bit from out of nowhere. And while we do not know for certain if Clarke’s role is this same character or not, I wouldn’t be surprised if it is.

What I also find interesting is the similarities in appearance between Clarke and Carrie Fisher who plays Princess Leia in the Star Wars films. There are rumours already circling that Clarke (who also played the younger version of Sara Conner in Terminator: Genysis) could be playing the role of a younger Leia Organa, but considering that Han Solo and Leia don’t meet until the events of A New Hope and that this film is taking place before this time period, that rumour would make no sense. However, with Phil Lord and Christopher Miller set as the directors, we could definitely expect the unexpected.

Clarke joins Alden Ehrenreich who is playing the infamous smuggler Han Solo and Donald Glover who has been cast as Lando Calrissian. The film has been written by Lawrence Kasdan (The Empire Strikes Back, The Force Awakens) and his son, Jon Kasdan, so expect it to fit into the greater anthology quite well.

The Han Solo film doesn’t have an official title yet and is set for release on May 25th, 2018.
