Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

  • On Friday evening, Bleeding Cool broke a rumoured story that was promptly picked up all over social media that the kickass new Batmobile had been stolen from the Batman v Superman set in Detroit. Luckily, Darryn didn’t need to hastily produce an alibi, as the story was soon debunked by the Detroit Free Press, who confirmed with Detroit police that “The Batmobile is safe in the Batcave where it belongs”.

But that gave director Zack Snyder the perfect opportunity to issue the latest in a series of back and forth movie-crossover gags that he and Star Wars: Episode VII director JJ Abrams have been pulling for the last few months, when he simply tweeted the pic below with the caption “Case closed”.

  • Forget Black Panther or Captain Marvel or even the Inhumans! There’s one hero that I want Marvel to make a movie for, and he’s one we’ve already glimpsed on screen: Penske Driver! Confused? Wracking your brain to remember just who that is and where you might have seen him? Well, Captain America: The Winter Soldier directors Joe and Anthony Russo explained all about the “hidden vigilante” recently while at a DVD/Blu Ray launch event for the movie.

The Russos also offered another tongue-in-cheek surprise, revealing a hidden vigilante hero of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. When Nick Fury is being attacked in the streets, he gets the moment he needs to escape when a yellow Penske truck slams into his attackers. Later, when Agent Sitwell is thrown into traffic, guess what hits him? Not just a Penske truck, but the Russos reveal, the very same Penske truck.

“The man who drives that truck,” Joe deadpans, joking that the driver is a candidate for a future Marvel One-Shot, “Is very highly trained. He thinks on his own terms. He’s got a plan and a very specific skill set.”

  • Speaking of men with a very specific skill set (mostly involving key-tar ties) who thinks on his own terms, Will Ferrell has revealed that not only has there been some more movement on a Zoolander sequel, but that his killer fashion designer character is looking to make a return.

“We are actually supposed to do a read-through of a sequel script soon, and Mugatu is a part of it.”

  • Poster of the day: Guardians of the Galaxy

  • Boardwalk Empire’s 5th and final season just kicked two weeks ago in the States to great fanfare. While it’s uncertain when our local TV screens will get graced by its presence, when it does, you may notice a few difference. The show has time-jumped by 7 years from to 1941, with a lot of previously well-known characters now in totally different positions. But one of the biggest (well actually smallest) physical changes is that Charlie “Lucky” Luciano (Vincent Piazza) is now sporting a scarred and droopy right eye, with no explanation given as to what happened. Well, no explanation unless you read this very informative piece over on Pajiba.
  • Chevy Chase and Beverly D’Angelo are getting back together again. And no, I’m not talking about the planned reboot for National Lampoon’s Vacation series. The pair of Vacationers are set to reuinite for a new ABC comedy series being penned by none other than Arrested Development man Brad Copeland. The still untitled series, which has received a big committment from the network, will have Chase and D’Angelo as “spouses in their 60s who are finally enjoying their golden years. They have raised their daughter, who is grown and now lives on the other side of the country with her two kids — and that’s the way these selfish grandparents like it; now they only need to see their grandkids a couple of times a year. But, due to circumstances beyond their control, they now are forced to raise their grandchildren.”

Sounds like something that both veteran actors can really get into, especially with Copeland’s guidance.

  • I never ever use the term “totes awks” (that’s lingo for “totally awkward”, just in case your old mind was wondering about it), but I think I will make an exception for this Star Wars clip, featuring the final scene in A New Hope but with John Williams’ iconic music stripped out. And the almost silent results is totes awks.

  • Arguments about it’s necessity aside, I rather enjoyed David Fincher The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo adaptation in 2011. Unfortunately, with just a so-so box office haul, Sony has been a bit non-committal on adapting the other two novels in Stieg Larsson’s Millenium trilogy. But according to what Fincher has told wedish site Afton Bladet(via Film Divider, which provided translation) things are looking hopeful for the second film,The Girl Who Played With Fire, and all because studios don’t like spending money and not getting anything in return.

“I think because (Sony) already has spent millions of dollars on the rights and the script, it will result in something. The script that we now have has huge potential. I can reveal that it is extremely different from the book.”

  • MARK WAHLBERG TWEETS PIC OF HIMSELF RIDING FLASH GORDON! Okay, okay, so it’s actually a new Indian Scout motorcycle with a custom Flash Gordon paintjob, but hey I need to fill my weekly quote of linkbait headlines somehow! If you haven’t guessed, the pic is from the set of upcoming comedy sequel Ted 2, in which Marky-Mark reprise his role as John, the Flash Gordon obsessed manchild whose best friend is a magical, foul mouthed teddy bear.

What’s interesting about the pic, is that it’s in front of a church, and the bike is decked out in bows and streamers. Is John finally getting married? We know that Mila Kunis’ character, who was the main love interest in the first film, has been all but written out of the sequel, so it could be that John is making the moves on somebody else this time around.

  • All movie script ideas, even if they’re as bastshit crazy as a dude trying to turn another dude into a sea-dog with orthadontal problems, has an origin story. And thanks to this really cool featurette, writer-director Kevin Smith can tell you how he came up with Tusk.

  • I enjoyed the hell out of the first Rurouni Kenshin live-action feature film (which was probably the best anime adaptation I’ve ever seen), and I’ve been eagerly looking forwards to it’s two sequels, the first of which, Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno, was released in Japan in August. And reading this article on the just released 3rd and final film in the trilogy, Rurouni Kenshin: The Legend Ends, which apparently boasts the best practical sword fighting scenes ever put to film, is certainly not helping to damper that eagerness.

And in case you’re a bit confused, yes, they just released the third movie, less than a month after the second movie. Nobody will ever accuse Japan of conforming to western entertainment standards.

  • You may recall that when I mentioned last week that Warner Bros might be looking to turn DC’s Legion of Super-Heroes into their answer to Guardians of the Galaxy, I had some reservations about the source material, particularly the rather ridiculous nature of several of the characters. I’m not the only one with these concerns though, as the folks over at The Gutters illustrated so clearly below.
