Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

We start with a new pic of Karl Urban as Judge Dredd, courtesy of an upcoming issue of Total Film Magazine. As much as I’m looking forward to this new cinemativ version of the cult classic British comic, I still think the proportions on Dredd’s helmet is off. It makes look sort of, dare I say it, phallic.

Courtesy of GeekTyrant we have this amazing toy S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier from The Avengers. If there’s one thing of today’s kids that I am jealous of  – besides their youthful good looks and lack of dependency on chronic medication – it’s the damn cool toys they get to play with. When I was a kid, an empty cardboard box (aka racing car aka fighter jet aka rocket ship aka tank) was about as awesome as it got. Now they get stuff like this:

S.H.I.E.L.D Helicarrier – The Biggest ever Marvel vehicle at 3 ft long! Features heavily in the upcoming Avengers film as our heroes’ base. Comes with a Captain America 3.75 inch figure & has 4 projectile firing deck cannons.

Artist Alex Gross has taken 31 vintage portraits and given them a geeky twist. The results are really cool:

Director Jose Padhila’s reboot of Robocop has found it’s scribe in Gran Torino writer Nick Schenk. For those of you young whippersnappers that don’t know, Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 sci-fi film told the tale of Alex Murphy, a Detroit police officer in the near future who is gunned down in the line of duty, but then revived as a crime fighting cyborg. As cheesy as that sounds, the film was a surprisingly mature social commentary that spawned a number of sequels and spinoffs. Unfortunately, these later efforts were a shadow of the first film.

In an interview last year, Padhila revealed his vision for the reboot:

“I have my take on it, and I can tell you this: In the first RoboCop when Alex Murphy is shot, gunned down, then you see some hospitals and stuff and then you cut to him as RoboCop. My movie is between those two cuts. How do you make RoboCop? How do you slowly bring a guy to be a robot? How do you actually take humanity out of someone and how do you program a brain, so to speak, and how does that affect an individual?”

A short while back we reported on a possible mystery cameo for the Avengers. According to actress Jenny Agutter, she saw a trailer on the film set filled with Spider-Man costumes, leading to speculation that Marvel had come to an agreement with Fox (who hold’s Spider-Man’s film rights) to have wall crawler appear in Joss Whedon’s superhero megaflick. However, last night Samuel L Jackson, Tom Hiddlestone,  Clark Gregg and Joss Whedon took to Twitter to answer some fan questions, and the director gave about as unambiguous an answer as he could about the rumour:

Ah bah, humbug!

Also coming out of that Twitter session though was the link to this tease for the upcoming Superbowl ad for the movie. The trailer contains some frantic running, some electroshock, a gut wrenching scream and is only 10 seconds long. Sort of like my love-making I guess:

James Bond is looking a bit haggard and long in the tooth in this first real official pic from Skyfall. I guess kicking terrorist ass all across the globe really takes it out of you. Some of you may recall there was an earlier image of Bond lounging poolside, but it was so thoroughly meh, that it just doesn’t count.

And that’s all that this old man has time for today. Time to pop some Salusa45, drink some prune juice and go to sleep for 16 hours. But before that, I need to git these kids off mah lawn!
