Welcome to The Extras! A daily dose of all the smaller movie related news, clips and just plain cool stuff that you might have missed!

Seems like we’re putting the “YA” in Friday today. Or something. OK, that was a horrible opening line, but hey, it’s been a really long week. This morning we brought you the trailer to The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones and it didn’t look half bad. Now here’s the second trailer for Beautiful Creatures which unfortunately, despite having a pretty great support cast in Jeremy Irons, Emma Thompson, Emmy Rossum and Viola Davis, is looking far too Twilight-ey for my tastes. This trailer gives you a lot clearer look at the story, which actually looks like it could have been decent, were it not for the shoehorned cliche teen romance angle.

Jamie Foxx has spoken to Access Hollywood about the recently reported story that he would be up for the role of the villainous Electro in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and revealed that the casting was actually not a done deal yet, but that he was plenty excited about it though:

“Fingers crossed it all works out… I have a little daughter, four years old, and what’s crazy is like, this past year she had a birthday where Spider-Man was the theme… I haven’t sprung it on her yet, but she will go crazy!”

No matter how much we loved Dredd 3D around here – and boy did we ever – it still bombed at the box office. Shame on all of you that didn’t go see it. But you guys can make amends on 8 January 2013 though, as it’s been revealed that that’s when the film will be getting its DVD and Blu Ray release. And if for some strange reason you still need more motivation than just our word, here’s a list of the extras that will be included on the disc.

The Blu-ray Disc and DVD both contain multiple behind-the-scenes featurettes including a look back at the 35 years of Judge Dredd. Dredd will be available on Blu-ray Disc and DVD for the suggested retail price of $39.99 and $29.95, respectively.

* “Mega-City Masters”: 35 Years of Judge Dredd” featurette
* “Day of Chaos: The Visual Effects of Dredd 3D” featurette
* “Dredd” featurette
* “Dredd’s Gear” featurette
* “The 3rd Dimension” featurette
* “Welcome to Peachtrees” featurette
* Dredd Motion Comic Prequel

Looks like them apes are up to some monkey business. With guns! This first teaser image – which is actually an 1992 art piece from artist Albert Wilson titled “Monkey with a gun” – has been officially unveiled on Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’ Facebook page with the tagline “Evolution becomes revolution”.

I know that due to it being an existing piece of artwork it might not happen, but that would make a killer poster and/or Blu Ray box art.

Remember that indie drama Reach Me that Sylvester Stallone was starring in for his old friend John Herzfeld? Well, turns out that Sly isn’t the only well known actor that the director convinced to join his ensemble cast. Brace yourself for a whole lot of names as Tom Berenger, Kevin Connolly, Thomas Jane, Kyra Sedgwick, Kelsey Grammer, Nelly, Danny Aiello, Terry Crews, David O’Hara, Omari Hardwick, Lauren Cohan, Elizabeth Henstridge, Cary Elwes and Ryan Kwanten (*gasp!*) have now all joined the production which deals with a group of people who all have a connection to a self help book written by an ex-Football coach.

Hersfeld, who met Stallone when they both acted in Cobra in 1985, has filmed some of the behind the scene stuff for Stallone’s The Expendables and is most famous for his multiple award winning HBO film, Don King: Only in America, had this to say about Reach Me:

“‘Reach Me’ has been my passion project for 12 years – everything I have to say as a filmmaker and a man is packed in this story of redemption and hope, and I am lucky and thrilled to be working with a phenomenally talented cast that are realizing my dream.”

Award winning writer Aaron Sorkin (The Social Network, Newsroom, The West Wing) has revealed the rather unconventional approach he will be taking for the script for Steve Jobs, the biopic of the Apple founder (not to be confused with the horribly named iJobs, the other biopic starring Ashton Kutcher in the lead role).

“[T]his entire movie is going to be three scenes and three scenes only. That all take place in real time… There will be no time cuts and each will take place before a product launch. Backstage before a product launch. The first one being the Mac, the second one being NeXT after he had left Apple and the third one being the iPod.”

“I don’t know if you remember the ad campaign he did. It was the ‘Think Different’ campaign. ‘Here’s to the crazy ones.’ That’s how it began. If I can end the movie with that text and that voice over… If I can earn that ending, then I will have written the movie that I wanted to write.”

Clearly not by accident, the 2nd trailer for On The Road has been released today, featuring a post-Twilight Kristen Stewart starring along side Garrett Hedlund and Sam Riley in an adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s acclaimed novel. For those of you who have written off all things K-Stew, this may be the one to start changing your minds. No she hasn’t suddenly gained Meryl Streep-like acting abilities, don’t be ridiculous, but she does go topless in this film. Just take your victories where you can, I guess.

My Stewart ragging aside though, it does have a great main and supporting cast (with a number of people already throwing quite a bit of praise Hedlund’s way) and looks to be gorgeously shot.

If you’re feeling a bit jilted by the news yesterday that 500 IMAX locations (with South most definitely not being one of them) will be airing a 9-minute long prologue for Star Trek Into Darkness in front of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, well here’s a little bit of compensation. The first full trailer for JJ Abrams’ Star Trek sequel won’t be playing in these 500 IMAX theatres, only on normal screenings of The Hobbit. And since the prologue will not be available online, the true Trekkies will probably end up handing over their cash for both an IMAX and normal screening to see both.

Tricksy, money making Hobbitses!

If that story made you feel a little bit better about our lack of IMAX in the country, well then I’m sorry to reveal that was just building you up to break you down (hey, you don’t see me judging you on how you get your jollies). Warner Bros have signed a 20-picture deal with IMAX that includes some major releases (and which would look amazing on the supersized format) such as Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity, Guillermo Del Toro’s Pacific Rim and Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel among others. Here’s the full list of slated releases for 2013, with a couple more still to be revealed for the following year:

Jack the Giant Slayer 3D (March 1, 2013); Man of Steel 3D (June 14, 2013); Pacific Rim 3D (July 12, 2013); 300: Rise of an Empire 3D (August 2, 2013); Gravity 3D: (TBD); Seventh Son 3D (October 18, 2013); The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug 3D(December 13, 2013); All You Need Is Kill 3D (March 7, 2014); Transcendence (TBD); Godzilla (5/16/14); Jupiter Ascending 3D (TBD); The Hobbit: There And Back Again 3D (July 18, 2014); Black Sky (TBD); Tarzan 3D (TBD); Fury Road 3D (TBD); Journey 3 3D (TBD)

Vulture is reporting that Michael Bay is eyeing China as a location for Transformers 4 to both be shot and take place in. With China becoming more and more important on the global movie market, a number of Hollywood filmmakers are looking to appeal to the Asian superpower, and due to China’s economic policies regarding film releases being pretty restrictive on foreign films, having your production in the country gives it a huge chance of achieving local release.

There were some earlier reports that most of the film’s story will take place in outer space, so how this move will affect that remains to be seen.

Here’s something really cool. If you a webcam and couple minutes (a hat is optional) then head on over to TarantintoShootsYou.net, a new tie-in game of sorts for Django Unchained, where Tarantino himself will direct you through that most essential piece of Western events: The stand-off.

Speaking of Django Unchained, if you exclude all the collaborative efforts and guest directing gigs, that movie will be the 7th feature film of Tarantino’s career. Only 3 away from his retirement then. Don’t worry, that last bit is as surprising to you as it was to me, but Tarantino explained to Playboy why that may just be the case:

“I just don’t want to be an old-man filmmaker. I want to stop at a certain point. Directors don’t get better as they get older. Usually the worst films in their filmography are those last four at the end. I am all about my filmography, and one bad film f*cks up three good ones … When directors get out-of-date, it’s not pretty.

I’m on a journey that needs to have an end and not be about me trying to get another job. I want this artistic journey to have a climax. I want to work toward something. You stop when you stop, but in a fanciful world, 10 movies in my filmography would be nice. I’ve made seven. If I have a change of heart, if I come up with a new story, I could come back. But if I stop at 10, that would be okay as an artistic statement.”

As a huge QT fan, I’d certainly hope that he does have that change of heart.

And now I’d like to warn anybody with a sensitive constitution to avert your eyes. David Arquette hasn’t been seen on screen in a while, but apparently he’s been busy hitting the gym to get in shape for his role in Orion, a sci-fi tale that sees Arquette as a hunter in a post-apocalyptic Earth who’s searching for his lost brother. To show just how fit he’s become, Arquette tweeted a message to his personal trainer saying “Thanks for helping me get in shape for my film Orion“.

Unfortunately he also attached this photo taken on the Detroit set where the film is shooting.

Gah! He looks like some kind of hobo Zardoz! Quick, somebody hand me the eye-bleach!

Here, get that out of your head with these on-set images of Matthew McConnaughey and some random brunette lady on the set of Dallas Buyer’s Club, the true story about a 1986 Texan man who gets diagnosed with AIDS, but is unable to afford the medication. Out of desperation he begins smuggling and redistributing medication to other destitute AIDS sufferers.

Wait… That’s no lady! That’s Jared Leto in drag! Argh! More eye bleach! MORE EYE BLEACH!
