The first full trailer for Valerian and a Thousand Planets is stunning

I have been in love with the science fiction of Luc Besson since Fifth Element. Indeed I even wrote a paper on it while I was studying movies at university. It offered a bright, albeit slightly dirty vision of the future that I really liked! Also Milla Jovovich. Nuff said! So when I heard the master of space opera was making the French novel by Jean-Claude Mézières into a movie I cried a little inside. Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets sounds epic, and judging by the first trailer, it will be! What’s it about?

In the 28th century, special operatives Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) maintain order throughout the universe for the government of the human territories. Under orders from their commander (Clive Owen), the duo embark on a mission to Alpha, an intergalactic city where diverse species share their technology and resources for the betterment of all. The ever-expanding metropolis is also home to sinister forces that jeopardize the future of mankind.

So without further ado, here it is!

That looks gorgeous! I wonder whether they had to fly the Navi over from Pandora or if they hitched. Some very beautiful looking space shots there too with countless races (I’d say a thousand) for the eyes to feast on. I was slightly concerned when I saw the teaser just because I do not know the leads very well. And let’s be honest Cara Delevingne’s dancing in Suicide Squad left, well, a lot to be desired. That said I am hopeful now. It looks like she gels with fellow co-star Dane DeHaan rather well! One thing I also picked up from the trailer is the music –  not just the Beatles that we were first introduced to in the teaser, but the synth-like Euro music of other scenes.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets also stars Rihanna, Clive Owen, Ethan Hawke and is out on the 20th of July.

  1. This looks great, such good visuals. I just really hope that Cara had some massive amounts of actor training since I last saw her.

I think the director calls it a 5th element killer!

If it’s a killer with a big ba-da-boom, then I have no problem giving it my multipass seal of approval.

This is just a week filled with HYPE.
The Rihanna thing is kinda weird, but I’m willing to forgive a lot simply because of the source material and if this makes good use of it.

    It looks amazing!

Incidentally, I knew the name sounded familiar, because years ago, I was in a Bioware forum, and a french guy was accusing Bioware of essentially lifting the storyline of Mass Effect from the Valerian comic book series. At the time, I thought the French guy was just sniffing glue, but now… having seen this trailer… I’m starting to think the guy might have been onto something.

Tons of things have “been inspired” by Valeriàn et Laureline. Even the metal bikini from Star Wars.

And some folk have the nerve to say that the French bring nothing to our collective culture except for smelly feet, breads, cheese and hairy arm pits!

I have French ancestry, so I must agree! 😀
Also, the carbonite freezing was kind of Valeriàn et Laureline’s thing. Only it was in plastic and the dude was still kind of awake.

And speaking of Pandora…doesn’t the opening scene also remind you of Borderlands.
