Friday Fright Club

Yes, you read that right. No need to get your eyes checked just yet…you might have to wait until your eyeballs explode out of your skull from fear as you enter our new Friday feature…the Fright Club. In a genre where the lines between what constitutes and good and a bad film is only as clear as the avid fans watching, horror is often an acquired taste and hopefully, over the next while, I can expose you to one or two films that you might see fit to add to your must-watch list. Either that, or you might think I’ve gone completely insane. It’s six of one, half a dozen of another. Let’s take it away!

For our first week, I’d like to say a few words about a genre that has over the last few years become overly saturated with both great and terrible titles…zombie films.

We are dangerously close to having a zombie Twilight, with romzom’s like Warm Bodies (although early assessment seems overwhelmingly positive) about to hit out screen. When George Romero popularized zombie movies years back, I’m sure he never dreamed the widespread appeal his films and all its offspring would claim but, as it usually goes with popularity, it soon sours. These days it is hard to spot a diamond in the rough when it comes to zombie films, but hopefully I can set you on the right track with the Spanish found footage horror film [Rec]. Not only does it give us a refreshing, surprising and shocking zombie movie, it does so in the most unexpected way ever…by utilising another over-saturated horror style – found footage.

Spanish writer-director Jaume Balaguero captures lightning in a bottle with  the story of television reporter (and white vest enthusiast) Angela Vidal and her cameraman cover the night shift at a Barcelono fire station. They get called on a seemingly routing call when suddenly all hell breaks loose, and the two are trapped in an apartment building with its residents, where the dead are starting to get hungry.

Violent, fast-paced and original, [Rec] is easily one of my favourite zombie films. Having seen many in my life, it was fantastic to be surprised by one again as it kept the surprises coming, right up until the urine-enducing finale.

Interested? Take a look at the trailer and stock up on those nappies! I expect some feedback. Go!
