Has the secret villain in Marvel's Avengers been revealed? SPOILER WARNING!

Movie Web is reporting what could possibly be a huge reveal. Up until now it’s been well known that Tom Hiddlestone’s Loki will be the main villain in Marvel’s upcoming Joss Whedon directed superhero megaflick, The Avengers. In classic Avengers comics lore, Loki was the villain that the original heroes banded together to fight against, so it made perfect sense. But there had been numerous hints that there may be another villainous hat thrown into the ring, and until now most people, myself included, suspected the mustache twirling head under that black hat to belong to the Kree alien race. The Kree were the first big bads in Marvel’s Ultimates – their alternate comic universe version of the Avengers upon which much of the current movie incarnations are based – which would make them especially fitting.

But now, toy manufacturers NECA have sent retailers a description of their upcoming The Avengers Heroclix line for 2012, and contained therein is a potential huge reveal:

Now clearly this could all just have been a mistake. Maybe some overworked copywriter, who had been surviving the last few weeks on nothing but raw coffee beans and those chewy kids vitamin tablets, didn’t do proper fact checking before hammering their bloody fingers onto the keyboard? Or it could just be that NECA is looking to milk the franchise by including Red Skull as part of this toy line, despite not being in the movie, as technically he is part of Marvel’s shared Avengers universe.

But if it does turn out to be true, it will be one of those forehead slapping “Why didn’t we think of that earlier?!” scenarios. We already know that in The Avengers Loki will be making use of the Cosmic Cube/Tesseract – an Asgardian artifact of almost unlimited power – the previous holder of which was none other than the Red Skull himself in Captain America: The First Avenger.

At the end of that film, ol’ Tall, Red and Skinless got himself sucked into a mysterious dimension. Could it be that that dimension may have been one of the 9 worlds of Asgardian lore, which is where he may encounter Loki, who also disappeared under mysterious circumstances after he fell off the transdimensional Bifrost Bridge in Thor. Maybe they’ll come to an amenable agreement on how to exact revenge on their enemies over a mug of mead at their weekly Dimensionally Displaced Despots meetings?

Until anything is confirmed though, this is all just speculation. But it does make the already almost unbearable wait until the film’s release in May even more excruciating. Seriously, we live in the year Two Thousand and Twelve. Why don’t we have time machines yet?!
