Henry Cavill talks justice and respect for MAN OF STEEL

Superman returns to the big screen next year, with an all new actor playing the role of the last son of Krypton. It’s a role made famous by Christopher Reeve and er, uhm, Dean Cain and Brandon Routh we guess, meaning that Cavill has some big boots to step into.

Here’s what he had to say about his upcoming work as the titular man of steel.

Speaking to Cineplex magazine, Cavill explained that his character would be more realistic, and more relevant, in order to help people accept him more easily;

What I can say is that it’s a modernization of the character and a very realistic view of one, obviously, very fantastic individual.

It’s an unreal situation, but it’s approached from a very practical viewpoint. We wanted to make the character easier to identify with.

Relevance is one thing, but with a character like Superman who has been around for decades, it’s also important that he stay true to his core values, something that Cavill explained was very important;

Very much so, yes. It’s important to do the role justice. There are a lot of people relying on me to do this well. I gladly accept that responsibility, and it’s a great one to have because it’s a wonderful opportunity.

I don’t let the pressures get to me because that’s going to hinder my performance and, therefore, let people down. So I choose to ignore the pressure side of it and focus on doing justice to Superman.

It’ll be interesting to see how Zack Snyder handles this icon. His last superhero film, Watchmen, managed to combine both style and substance, and hopefully with Christopher Nolan on board as a producer, we’ll get a film that pleases both sides of audiences, one that wants to see the legendary hero explored further, and the other side that wants to see him use a skyscraper as a baseball bat in an epic fight.

Man of Steel is out next year June, and also stars  Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, Laurence Fishburne and Russell Crowe.

  1. Watchmen proved that Snyder knows how to capture the mood and substance of a comic series into a movie. Watchmen was a perfect representation of the comic. Even though I dislike most of DC (especially Superman), I’m still excited for this.

    I really feel that Brandon Routh got screwed. He was a great Superman and Clark Kent (the first since Reeve to come even close to pulling off the “disguise”). Unfortunately, he was stuck in a very mediocre movie, where all he got to do was lift and catch things.

    And while I’m really intrigued to see this new mature approach that Snyder appears to be bringing to the table (at least based on that fantastically moody trailer), and I really enjoyed his translation of Watchmen, my concern is with Henry Cavill.

    Unlike Routh who was an unknown coming into the film, and thus a huge pleasant surprise for me, I’ve seen Cavill in a number of things, and he hasn’t really impressed me all that much. He’s not a horrible actor, but I can’t exactly call him a great one either, and hasn’t shown any of the subtlety and nuance he would need to sell the whole Clark/Superman deal.

    Granted, we don’t know exactly how that relationship will be displayed here, but it’s still got me worried a bit.

      For once I agree with you on something. Superman Returns was a dud of a movie. Superson? And sorry to say it, but Kevin Spacey’s Lex Luthor was a bit of a yawnfest.
      But Routh was the star of that film for all the reasons you mentioned. Bryan Singer may be a decent director, but not for superhero movies. X-Men was allright. But in a Superman movie, you want to see Super things happen. Well, okay. Lifting the entire island and hurtling it into space was kind of cool.
      Just have to wonder if, on a planet far far away, they managed to get a die hard oil driller to save them from said Island…
