Here's your 2012 Black List of unproduced screenplays

Every year, we lament the death of originality in Hollywood, and every year the Black List comes out to prove that there’s actually plenty of originality to go around, most studios just happen to be corporate version of Mr Magoo: rich, myopic and risk-averse.

What is the Black List? Essentially a list, compiled by film exec Franklin Leonard, of scripts written in 2012 that are creating the most buzz in Tinsel Town, but which have not yet been turned into a feature film. Check out this year’s entrants after the jump.

Now you may recognize a couple of entries on here, as some of these (e.g. The Story of Your Life, All Nighter, Somacell, The Equalizer, etc) have been optioned by studios, and may even have some cast and crew attached to it, but they are not yet officially in production.

Here’s Leonard’s now familiar greeting on Blcklst.com to kick to off the list he has compile for this year, which also explains in more detail how it was done:

The Black List was compiled from the suggestions over 290 film executives, each of whom contributed the names of up to ten of their favorite scripts that were written in, or are somehow uniquely associated with, 2012 and will not have completed principal photography during this calendar year.

This year, scripts had to receive at least six mentions to be included on the Black List. All reasonable effort has been made to confirm the information contained herein.

The Black List apologizes for all misspellings, misattributions, incorrect representation identification, and questionable 2012 affiliations.

It has been said many times, but it’s worth repeating:

The Black List is not a “best of ” list. It is, at best, a “most liked” list.

Enjoy.

Now that the formalities are out of the way, get ready to get your scroll on, as you check out this rather lengthy list of 78 entries. Above each entry you will find a number correlating to the amount of votes it got. You can find my favourite picks at the end.
