Hold on to your Swiss Army knives, the MACGYVER reboot movie is still on

It wasn’t too long ago that we told you a Macgyver TV series reboot was in the works with James Wan (Fast and Furious franchise) at the helm, this after he’d revealed he was no longer working on the long-gestating movie reboot of the iconic 80’s DIY hero brought to life by Richard Dean Anderson.

Most presumed that the movie reboot had subsequently been cancelled, but (as Coming Soon tells us) this is not the case. Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer confirmed on Friday that both the TV series and the movie reboots are moving forward.

Original series creator Lee David Zlotoff and Neal Moritz (producer on the Fast and Furious franchise) are heading up the movie reboot… and that’s about all we know. James Wan is still set to direct the TV series pilot, with the script by playwright Paul Downs Colaizzo.

I could try to find out more using the internet, the broken Bic pen lying in front of me and my coffee mug – but it’s still half full and I need it. Given all the Fast and Furious connections however, I suspect MacGyver might just be behind all those gravity-defying cars.

In addition to both of these projects, Zlotoff was also working on a project called ‘The Next MacGyver’ with the (US) National Academy of Engineering to crowd source ideas for a female-led MacGyver series. It’ll be interesting to see if this idea makes it’s way into either the TV series or movie reboot.

Both of these reboots are something I feel rather iffy about. MacGyver was great fun in the 80’s, but it was the 80’s, where cheesy TV series reigned supreme. Translating this concept to our current technology-reliant time period is tricky, but that might also be its strength – if you forget that Youtube has a video on how to DIY just about anything.

What do you think?

Richard Dean Anderson is what made McGyver fun. He is most likely the reason Stargate series was such a massive success as well.

Gonna be hard to upstage him.
