Mr-McMannion

Remember remember, something about November I think. We’re in the penultimate month of the year. The Empire Strikes Back of Calendar months! The beginning of the end! Verb the adjective! I have no idea where I’m going with this rant, but mark my words, it very much is November! Which might be a good enough excuse for me to stop wearing the Freddy Krueger costume and scaring kids before the cops get here.

Quick question for anyone who has ADSL/wired internet. I know you pay for data, and you pay for the line. Do you pay for the amount of time you actually spend online (like dial-up)?

Dail up uses your telephone line, so it’s like you’re calling the internet and paying per minute. ADSL is different in that you only pay for the data you use. So you can be connected 24/7 it doesn’t matter.

Ah, I see. So Web Africa has 4 Mbps for R300 p/m, with another R300 p/m for the line. So it will be a straight R600 p/m, right?
Any suggestions for a good ISP?

Oh, okay. But that’s just a flat fee every month right? Not reliant on how much time you actually spend online?

          • Hammersteyn

            November 2, 2015 at 16:19

Uncapped is flat. You pay once and you have zero worries about extra cost. But if you’re a little to over zealous with downloads they may cap you speed. But that’s almost impossible if you use it for gaming and Netflix for instance

I use Crystal , as they promise to cater to streaming online and gaming, two things we do. I think them fantastic, but I use the premium service so perhaps mileage will vary.

There are several good ones out there, really. Search for ISP of the year 2015 Mybroadband to also get a good idea

And, as Alien Emp said, your monthly telephone line rental must also be paid for

Hey Dude. I am living in a area that has no decent coverage, No plans for Fibre and the best line I can get is 2 meg. I am using 4g which is only good for one game, Call of Duty. ( I cry myself to sleep at night ). Obviously you have used a fixed line for some time. What kind of gaming experience can I expect if I get a fixed line. Comparable to what you are using ? Ie : COD, Battlefield, Gran Turismo, Destiny etc etc. How is your latency ?

          • Hammersteyn

            November 2, 2015 at 16:37

Using a 4MB at the moment. Latency is still there because we have no local servers. It’s around 200ms.

          • Darren Peach

            November 2, 2015 at 16:39

Ouch. I guess you don’t play cod ? One of the reasons I play it is because they have local servers. So, Even if I get a fixed line the old problems still exist ?

            November 2, 2015 at 17:03

Don’t go through Crystal Web, they are useless when the shit hits the fan!

            November 2, 2015 at 17:06

I use Afrihost and I won’t touch Crystal Web with another mans pole!! They are fucking idiots who forgot that in 2015 you are supposed to deliver or service as much if not more than your product!

I love Afrihost, have really not had a lot of problems with them. Capped account which I can change on their hub anytime… And by far the best service I have had from any ISP. (Their MTN backbone was not ideal but since they moved most over to Afrigreen which they have more control of things have improved for everyone. I have been on Afrigreen for 3-4 months and it is awesome!)
