ION09092014

As the son of a butcherman, I’ve developed both a taste and an appreciation for a fine cut of meat. Couple that with South Africa’s appetite for beef, and it’s really no surprise that I like a good steak; perfectly seasoned, seared and never anything over a medium rare. Sauces and basting be damned too; the thing should taste like beef.

There are 4 cuts of steak that are usually available to we South Africans when it comes to local eateries; Sirloin, Rump, Fillet and T-Bone – though increasingly, the rib-eye is making its presence known on South African menus.

Sirloin’s your fattiest – but also packed with flavour. Fillet’s the pricy one that’s lowest in fat and is soft like butter, but also the lowest in flavour. Rump  – or strip if you prefer – is the nice middle ground; a perfect combination of fat and flavour, still with a bit of bite to it. If you like that fat, and want even more flavour – go for the Ribeye; marbled with thin veins of fat , it all melts during cooking to give you a juicy, succulent, and flavourful bit of beef. The T-Bone – a South African favourite – gives you rump and fillet, separated by its namesake. .

there are a number of great places in SA to get a good steak, and Spur isn’t one of them. Some of my favourite bits of fried beef have come from The Local Grill in Parktown, Grillhouse in Rosebank and Thunder Gun in Blackheath.

What’s your favourite cut of steak – and where’s your favourite place to get it? Seriously though…if you say Spur, then you need your head read.

Here’s the news we didn’t post because I’ve made a grave mis-steak.

Editor. I’m old, grumpy and more than just a little cynical. One day, I found myself in possession of a NES, and a copy of Super Mario Bros 3. It was that game that made me realise that games were more than just toys to idly while away time – they were capable of being masterpieces. I’m here now, looking for more of those masterpieces.

Why is there green stuff on the steak? Real Steak eats green stuff to grow, they do not wear it!

    • Dutch Matrix

The green stuff does not worry me so much as the red stuff. That cow can still be saved with R50.00 and a good vet!

      • Skyblue

        Lol

      • A good vet and R50? What’s the R50 for, last rights?0-O

        • Dutch Matrix

No. To send the Ginger to go buy himself a few lollipops and let the grown-ups save the cow! 🙂

          • Well us grown ups eat cow, hell you want to do with it is your own damn business!

    • Hammersteyn

      Hope it’s chillies

    • Admiral Chief Assassin

Green stuff is to test if the cow still wants to eat it

  • Alien Emperor Trevor

If you say Spur, we have serious beef – metaphorically speaking. 😉

I braaied two of those gigantic Woolies thick-cut aged steaks on Sunday, to damn perfection if I say so myself. Medium-well with a light seasoning of salt & pepper – just enough to add to the taste without overpowering the flavour of the meat. NOM NOM NOM.

    • Skyblue

And just like that, I’m hungry as fuck now, thx.

      • CAE9872

        Yeah me too

    • Sk3tz0

      Correction… Medium Rare..

    • At least you didn’t spur(n) it? O-0

    • Admiral Chief Assassin

      MEDIUM WELL?
You no longer exist to me…

      • Agreed! Ps. Getting LOADS of spam. Must be how Trev likes it 0-O

  • Skyblue

Finally, food I can relate to. Ribeye and rump for me thanks… mind you, I eat any decent steak and prefer them grilled on a fire over a gas grill, esp when I’m cooking.

    • Sageville

      Ribeyeeee…..

      • Skyblue

        hehe

  • CAE9872

I grill a decent steak; wife makes wedges…hmmm that gives me an idea for supper tonight actually. I am not a sauce guy though – I like my steaks el naturale.

    • Skyblue

      Oven wedges or deep fried?

Best advice for wedges, buy your self some Nando’s peri peri sprinkles and Perinaise, the best combo available on the planet for wedges.

      • CAE9872

Oven – wife puts something or other on – tastes delicious is all I know.

      • PERSONA 5!!!! (Umar)

Best..whenever I have nandos I always take wedges and perinaise..best best best

    • Spaffy

I think I’ll do the same tonight

  • Hammersteyn

I can hear my stomach dying

  • That steak is so rare that you could stick a fork in it and hear it moo.

    • Hammersteyn

That steak is so rare it’s chewing my salad

    • Grant [_G_] Hancock

That steak is so rare a good vet could still save it

      • Admiral Chief Assassin

Indeed, if you have a defibrillator handy, it should live again!

    • That steak is actually pretty far from rare. ;P
      MAN UP, SISSY.

      • Hammersteyn

        Agreed, it’s very near perfect

        • Mark Treloar

          So almost dead then.

      • Spaffy

        Sous-vide

      • Brenz

oh man, kids these days, dont know how to eat a piece of meat like a real man should.
personally that steak is a bit over for me, i prefer rare.
though as far as the picture goes, not sure why there is a lemon on the plate, unless its a surf n turf and the surf is hiding away under the turf…

        • MrChinwag

          Its from john dories..

      • Admiral Chief Assassin

LOL, you tell em butcher boy!

    • Anon A Mouse

I take it your favourite steak is from the Spur then.

    • Brenz

      That steak is overcooked

  • Grant [_G_] Hancock

The best steak I’ve found is at The Butchers Diner in the small town of Maclear in the Southern Drakensburg. For the price of a choppie at Spur you will get a MOERSE chunk of cow… and cooked to absolute perfection.

  • Anon A Mouse

I love a good rib-eye or rump. Best place to get those are from my braai. And anything over medium rare is a waste of good meat.

  • rollingmol

Came for the news , was made hungry with the pic ,but stayed for the comments 🙂 … Lazygamers version of I came, I saw, I conquered.

  • Mark Treloar

    Thundergun

  • Viking Of Science

@OddSockZA:disqus if you ever find yourself ibn Cape town, get over there and have any of their cuts, they’re great!

    • Anon A Mouse

Chuck is what I use in a lekker potjie.

    • Spaffy

a Menu without prices is too rich for me…

    • Mossel

I will check this place out! How is the prices? Some of the best steak I have had was at The Hussar Grill.

      • Viking Of Science

        between 150 – 250 depending on cut etc…
sides (if you’re into that sort of thing range from 25-50)

  • Sk3tz0

Pirates Grill in Plumstead Cape town.. Fuck that places sells a mean steak and bad ass ribs.

  • Sk3tz0

Vleis is Vleis so lank dit Rooi Vleis is.

  • Cat

    • Spaffy

      You seem disappointed 🙂

  • BacchusZA

Crawdaddys’ here in Pretoria – both the Brooklyn & Centurion outlets – do a pretty damn good steak, and for not outrageous prices either.
They also do an awesome butterfish, which I have most times I end up there.

  • Sir Rants A Lot: On Pandora

    #nomnomnomnom

  • Barristers in Newlands do some damn amazing steaks! Medium-rare thanks!

  • That steak in the header is about as rare as the burn marks Phil Fish regularly gives himself…

  • Ross Woofels Mason

Medium Rare rump steak, Thunder gun is probably the best steak house I’ve been to, though when I go there it’s always for the ribs =p

  • Alien Emperor Trevor

I just noticed the last sentence on Geoff’s bio. “I am also the emperor of the backend” O_O

  • Zander Boshoff

So this just made me hungry

  • Admiral Chief Assassin

Medium rare sirloin or rib-eye for me

  • Admiral Chief Assassin

Geoff, you son of a butcher, now I want to BRAAI

  • Crack2483

  • Michael

  • Kromas of City17

The man in me says STEAK! but the kid in me says where are the ribs!

  • WhiteRock

Thunder Gun is legendary – I must say though, when I get the chance to go there it’s hard not to take the Lone Ranger 1Kg of Ribs!

  • Kensei Seraph

I’m not actually that big a fan of beef.
I do still appreciate an excellent steak but generally I’d rather have something else.
