Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it's the first two MAN OF STEEL teaser trailers!

I’ll be honest, I just haven’t been excited for Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel. Besides for the new unitard (emphasis on “tard”) suit and bad 90’s hairdo, I also never wanted Snyder to direct this. I always felt the job should have gone to Martin Campbell, while Snyder should have done Green Lantern instead, where his flashy directorial style would have been much better suited.

Not even the announcement of Chris Nolan (In Nolan we trust!) as executive producer had me excited. But judging by these two new trailers though, it seems like I should have had a little faith.

The two teaser trailers released are essentially duplicates of each other, however the first features a voiceover by Russell Crowe, who plays Jor-El, Superman’s biological Kryptonian father; while the second contains a voiceover from Kevin Costner, who plays Jonathan Kent, Superman’s adoptive human father.

It’s a very nice touch, highlighting both the alien and human heritage of Superman, and how both men instilled their values and pride into him.

Much more poignant than the voiceovers though, is the fact that this is the footage shown at Comic-Con but minus all the action scenes, and coupled with an incredibly moody score, this results in a film (at least in these trailers) that looks very un-Snyder like.

Is it just me or is Snyder channeling his inner Terence Mallick in some of these sweeping shots? And as hobo-Clark Kent, Henry Cavill certainly looks the part. I’d love to get a proper glimpse at those Comic-Con action scenes though, you know, not on footage that looks and sounds like it’s been recorded on a Nokia 3310. At the bottom of a very dirty ocean. By Muhammed Ali.

Until then though, I have to admit that this footage has my excitement levels for Man of Steel go from being almost non-existent to shooting up, up and away!

It certainly has a different tone to the previous films. This might be good, providing Snyder doesn’t insist on making a 3-hour movie that drags more than a Thai bar.

From what I’ve read from the people in the know, is that Snyder has almost gone the Batman Begins route by making this a very mature Superman tale. I don’t think it will be wall to wall drama, as the leaked descriptions of a couple crazy action sequences attests, but this is apparently not a film being made for kiddies.

I can live with that. It does look interesting and DC def. needs the boost.

I am so excited for this. Loving how this one seems to be going for a deeper exploration of Clark’s divided loyalties – to his human upbringing or his Kryptonian origin. There are some real thematic depths to be mined with the character of Superman, and looking at his”gap years/years in the desert” – ala Superman: Birthright – is a good place to start.

I’ve always thought that Superman is a pathetic hero. Tried to enjoy him, but have never been able to. But I trust Zack more than anyone else when it comes to making films interesting and, for lack of better words, pieces of Art.

This is the first Superman film I’m excited for. Simply because it has good old Zack! He has yet to disappoint me. In fact, he has yet to leave me feeling anything short of “OMG that movie was amazing! Zack is a flipping GENIUS!”

While I used to enjoy Snyder’s work immensely, it was purely from a visual standpoint. He has an amazing eye for visceral spectacle. Luckily he was always adapting good stories or teaming up with people who make good stories. The moment he ventured out on his own with Sucker Punch, his shortcomings as storyteller got exposed badly.

However, based on this trailer and feedback from the Comic-Con footage, it looks like Christopher Nolan and David S Goyer is giving Snyder the guidance and story foundation he needs.

I’ve been thinking about this. Zack Snyder has done justice to the licenses he used (300 and Watchmen) by staying very true to the source material (especially with Watchmen). The Dark Knight Trilogy, however, was not very true to its source. Batman himself was quite similar to Batman in the comics, but Scarecrow was not Scarecrow, Joker was definitely not the joker, and Bane pretty much shares the name with his comic version, and nothing else.

I wonder if this will be true to Superman of the comics, or take on the Christopher Nolan treatment and be something else in its own right.

From what we’ve seen and heard thus far, they seem to very much be crafting their own Superman tale, story wise, while still borrowing a few concepts from a couple of Superman’s earlier comic book reboots, a la John Byrne’s Man of Steel and Mark Waid’s Superman: Birthright.

I’m really looking forward to this. I think its very hard to make a true Superman film these days, and that’s why it hasn’t been rebooted so many times like others. I really hope it lives up to my expectations. I dare say that Superman is my favorite comic of all time, the DC shining stir in my eyes!

Did you notice that the music used in these clips is the exact same as in Fellowship of the Ring directly after Gandalf falls from the bridge of Khazad-dûm? It game me chills!
