Growing up, horror films were the celluloid equivalent of an initiation ritual for us young kids. After seeing so many nightmarish flicks that took advantage of teenager stupidity, nakedness and doomed cheerleaders, there was very little that could actually frighten us properly.
And then we saw John Carpenter’s The Thing, a suspenseful film that taught us to never trust husky dogs and always check our friends blood with heated pieces of wire.
