Kmart chooses HD DVD – Bad week for Blu-Ray

In yet another blow to Blu-Ray this week, Kmart has decided to stock HD-DVD exclusively from now on.

They cited the lower price of HD-DVD players as their main reason but did reiterate that they will continue to sell the Blu-Ray enabled PS3.

This really hasn’t been a good week for Blu-Ray has it? Could it really be possible that the rank outsider is going to take this format war?

It does seem possible now, however I think it is more likely that we are going to be forced to live with dual formats for a long time to come.

However word is that Warner the biggest publisher on both formats is about to change to Bluray only.

“That may not be for long, Silverberg (VP of high-definition media for Warner Home Video) said. “One thing that may be changing is our strategy,” he said. “When both formats launched and hardware prices were high, we made a decision to support both formats and let the consumer decide. But now that hardware pricing is affordable for both Blu-ray and HD DVD, it appears consumers no longer want to decide — so the notion of staying in two formats for the duration is something we are re-evaluating now that we are in the fourth quarter.”

Silverberg noted that Warner has the top-selling Blu-ray title of all time with 300 and is consistently No. 1 or No. 2 in both Blu-ray sales market share and in number of Blu-ray titles in the market.

“We can definitely talk Blu-ray,” he said. “We are committed to the format.”

JP, did you read the whole article?
    Blu ray will never die.
Either Bluray will win (most likely) or we will have dual formats.

I did read the article. The PS3 is on life support.

If the stand alone players really take off the studios will HAVE to do HD-DVD.

You should some research yourself. It took ten years for betamax to die.

Its all about how cheap the HD-DVD players can take the market by storm this Xmas. Why do you think Sony has been cutting on PS3’s price? To make it an affordable BR player, so its not about games.

90% of the public that own Blu-Ray want Blu-Ray. 90% of the public without any HD system don’t give a toss and will buy into the market when cheap hardware of whatever HD verison becomes available. HD-DVD has taken the initiative and will reap the rewards.
