MacGruber wasn’t a box office success, but like so many comedies in a similar vein it has gone on to receive plenty of cult love from fans that have learned to appreciate it for the gem that it is. Will Forte – who has leaped into my top 5 comedic actors since my discovery of the amazing Last Man On Earth – has stated that if the comedy show doesn’t get picked up for a second season that he would be putting time into a script for a MacGruber sequel.

Well Last Man On Earth was renewed for a second season and rightly so. However it would seem that, to the pleasure of the many fans that have been waiting for a sequel, Forte work has finally begun on that ever elusive Magruber sequel script anyway!

Magruber was based on a Saturday Night Live skit of the same name, parodying the hit show MacGyver. It saw Forte, Kristen Wiig, Ryan Phillippe, Powers Boothe, Maya Rudolph, Val Kilmer and a bunch of WWE superstars come together in 2010 to turn the funny skit into a full-blown, explosive heavy work of comedic art that has gone on to Cult Status. Unfortunately, as mentioned before, the movie didn’t make a profit at the box office so it is understandable why studios could be hesitant to enthusiastically back the project. But with the massive following the movie has cultivated in the years since, it would make sense to me for a company like Netflix to produce this movie and reap the benefits straight away, allowing fans instant access to a project they have been calling for, for years.

Forte co-wrote the original script with John Soloman and director Jorma Taccone, and had been planning to team up again for years to begin work on the new script. And according to reports writing has begun, and there is already a first draft dated September 17th. So while it is still early days, at least the ball is now rolling. That being said, the movie has not yet been picked up yet, so while things are looking positive there is still a way to go.

What are your thoughts on this? Did you love or hate the original MacGruber? Would you like to see this sequel make it to the big screen or even get made at all? Let us know in the comments below.
