It was Labour Day in the US of A. Which should have been primetime for movies this past weekend. Except it wasn’t. Hell, it was a terrible weekend. Here’s how everyone did at that box office.
Taking an easy first place, Guardians Of The Galaxy remained at the top of the charts. Currently sitting with an international haul of $547.7 million, GOTG has proven its worth, and then some. On the new release front, As ABove/So Below made a paltry $8.3 million, keeping up with the trend of low budget horror movies not exactly finding a labour day weekend audience.
The November Man also failed to find any success this past weekend, raking in a meagre $7.6 million in explosions, actions and Pierce Brosnan. Meanwhile, the 30th Anniversary re-release of Ghostbusters proved that this franchise still has some magic inside, with a total protonic reversal of over $1.6 million for that weekend. Here’s how everyone else did:
- Guardians Of The Galaxy – $16.3 Million
- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – $11.7 Million
- If I Stay – $9.2 Million
- As Above/So Below – $8.3 Million
- Let’s Be Cops – $8.2 Million
- The November Man – $7.6 Million
- When The Game Stands Tall – $5.6 Million
- The Giver – $5.2 Million
- The Hundred Foot Journey – $4.6 Million
- The Expendables 3 – $3.5 Million
Top ten departures this week include Sin City: A Dame To Kill For and The Expendables 3. The Sin City sequel has bombed harder than an Idols audition using a Fugees song, making only $15.3 million in two weeks, and keeping the Rodriguez sequel curse alive. The Expendables 3 did marginally better, but not by much. That sequel made $83.5 million, after a three week run in the top ten.

Guardians of the Galaxy is now officially the biggest movie in US for 2014. You did good this time, America. You did good.
