In my opinion, 2015 was a terrible year for animated films with, Inside Out aside, very few animation movies actually worth seeing. This means that when a really good animated film pops around, audiences are going to flock to see it and that is exactly the case with Disney animation’s latest film Zootopia (released as Zootropolis in South Africa) which has not only gone on to debut at the top of the US Box Office charts, but set the record for Disney Animation’s biggest opening weekend ever – quite an impressive performance (and Zootopia also garnered a 98% approval rating on rotten tomatoes, so it’s critically good to boot).

It finally toppled Deadpool, which has spent several weeks at the top and brought in loads of money for Fox. It’s still raking in some solid cash after 6 weeks on the charts and will probably stay in the top 10 for a few more weeks, but its nice to see some competition finally arrive.

The Deadpool behemoth is now the 4th high grossing superhero film of all time and is only $7.6 million short of Iron Man which lies in 3rd spot. Not bad for an R-rated film which studios felt would not be successful. It’s also become only the 3rd R-rated movie to pass the $300 million mark in the US and with the staying power it is showing, will probably climb further up both these lists in the coming weeks.

Overall, it was a good weekend for debut films, with London Has Fallen coming in 2nd spot. The sequel that nobody asked for or wanted clearly has some people willing to see it as it came in with a fairly good $20 million, which is not massive, but a solid return for the film – though well short of its budget which was $60 million. It does however continue a poor run of movies from Gerard Butler and a second consecutive number two spot after Gods of Egypt came in 2nd last week as well.

Next on the debut list is Tina Fey’s new release Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, which pulled in an underwhelming $7.6 million. Tina Fey is a great entertainer and actress, but on her own not a big enough star to drive audiences to the cinema, it seems. There was one more new entry, The Other Side of the Door, which failed to even break into the top 10, but was only open in a small number of theatres, so still did quite healthy by comparison.

Let’s see what the rest of the chart looks like.

  • 1. Zootopia –  $73.7 million (NE)
  • 2. London Has Fallen – $21.7 million (NE)
  • 3. Deadpool – $16.4 million (LW: 1st)
  • 4. Whiskey Tango Foxtrot – $7.6 million (NE)
  • 5. Gods of Egypt – $5 million (LW: 2nd)
  • 6. Risen – $3.9 million (LW: 4th)
  • 7. Kung Fu Panda 3 – $3.5 million (LW: 3rd)
  • 8. The Revenant – $3.3 million (LW: 11th)
  • 9. Eddie The Eagle – $3.1 million (LW: 6th)
  • 10. The Witch – $2.5 million (LW: 7th)

Elsewhere, Gods of Egypt continued to fall, coming in 5th spot with only $5 million and still well short of achieving its massive $140 million budget with only $22 million received thus far. Kung Fu Panda 3 also  fell to 7th, but has still made a tidy $134 million at the box office though.

Falling out of the top 10 were Triple 9, How To Be Single and Race. None of these movies made too much of an impact at the Box Office and were mostly disappointing, though How To Be Single did a good job in at least staying in the top 10 for 4 weeks

The Oscars were good to The Revenant which bounced back into the top 10 with a strong showing in 8th after 11 weeks on the chart, but the biggest climber actually goes to the Best Picture winner Spotlight, which although not making it into the top 10, went up 8 places to 13 and had the biggest jump of all movies from the last week (149% improvement over last week). It seems the Oscars can still provide some box office boost to films and that audiences are keen to see movies that are strong critically.

(LW = Last Week, NE = New Entry)
