Pacific Rim might be onto something. The Guillermo Del Toro directed film is most likely all about the impossible odds that the human spirit can overcome in the face of a daunting challenge, but let’s face it, we just want to see some giant robots on the big screen.
Could this be the start of a new genre in movies? Ye various pantheons of gods, I do hope so! Because one iconic anime series by the name of Gaiking, is now also readying itself to cross the pond and go big in the west.
Valhalla Entertainment is teaming up with All Nippon Entertainment Works to start work on a film based on the cult classic anime Gaiking, better known by its US name Shogun Warriors.
Originally in pre-production back in 2010, that attempt failed, but it looks like interest has been rekindled with the positive word of mouth stemming from Pacific Rim.
The film “follows a young man who is recruited to serve as the lead pilot for the Super Robot Gaiking. When Earth is threatened by an alien race intent on taking over the planet, he emerges as the only one who can pilot the massive robot. Together with his fellow co-pilots he must fight off the alien force in order to save mankind.”
Gale Ann Hurd is currently the lead producer on this venture which was finalised yesterday, with screenwriters, directors and more producers now being sought for the film.
Here’s the full press release right here, for you wordy types out there. So is this the start of a new era in cinema based on even more robots in disguise and skyscraper sized automatons battling one another?
I certainly hope so! Now to find a few hundred million dollars so that I can get a Grendizer film made…
