A week after watching Wonder Woman, I’m still dwelling on just how marvellous this movie was. Everything about it is divine, and I’m just a teensy bit in love with Gal Gadot after her impeccable performance. Wonder Woman is not without its drawbacks, but if this is the way comic book superhero movies are headed, then sign me up.

Baywatch

Baywatch follows devoted lifeguard Mitch Buchannon (Dwayne Johnson) as he butts heads with a brash new recruit (Zac Efron). Together, they uncover a local criminal plot that threatens the future of the Bay.
I truly wish this wasn’t the case, but Baywatch is really, really, really stupid. Oh don’t get me wrong, you’ll laugh, but the same way you laugh at a puppy that runs into a wall. It’s funny because it’s dumb, but at the same time, it’s actually just… sad. Every time you think that the cast is going to fully commit to absurdity, they pull back and try to get you to take the movie seriously. Then they throw in a dick joke or two. It’s immensely frustrating to watch and even the delightful lead performance by Dwayne Johnson couldn’t keep me interested.

Their Finest

With London emptied of its men now fighting at the Front, Catrin Cole (Gemma Arterton) is hired by the British Ministry as a “slop” scriptwriter charged with bringing “a woman’s touch” to morale-boosting propaganda films. Her natural flair quickly gets her noticed by dashing movie producer Buckley (Sam Claflin) whose path would never have crossed hers in peacetime. As bombs are dropping all around them, Catrin, Buckley and a colorful crew work furiously to make a film that will warm the hearts of the nation. Although Catrin’s artist husband looks down on her job, she quickly discovers there is as much camaraderie, laughter and passion behind the camera as there is onscreen.
If you favour dry British wit and broad satire over dick jokes, then you’ll enjoy The Finest far more than Baywatch. Full of low-key but deep emotion, with a charming cast and chock full of nostalgia, Their Finest is a witty crowd-pleaser.
