We see so many films and TV series adapted from novels and books, that it’s actually a refreshing change to see adaptations flow in the opposite direction. Penguin Random House has announced that they have acquired the rights to publish a three-volume series of original books inspired by the TV series Black Mirror.

For those younger readers who might not know what a book is, it’s a collection of word, sentences, paragraphs and chapters that are used together to create a story where you need to use your imagination to fill in the visuals. Yes, believe it or not, that’s a thing and it’s where the best stories come from, even if Darryn might convince you otherwise that picture books are the way to go.

Black Mirror, which has its origins as a British TV series before becoming a Netflix original series is proving to be a massive success on the streaming service where its thought-provoking and satirical storylines of our connection to technology and the ramifications it has on our lives definitely connecting with viewers. The series, which features a different cast and story for each episode is perfect for this kind of concept, as it can give writers complete freedom to run with the show’s broader themes without needing to worry about ensuring their story fits into some broader timeline or narrative.

Black Mirror creator Charlie Booker is excited about the plans, which unlike what you typically see in film and TV adaptations offer up a collection of wholly original stories penned by popular writers on the different themes in the series, as he revealed to Entertainment Weekly:

All-new Black Mirror stories from exciting authors — that’s a joyous prospect. And they’re appearing in a high-tech new format known as a ‘book.’ Apparently, you just have to glance at some sort of ‘ink code’ printed on paper and images and sounds magically appear in your head, enacting the story. Sounds far-fetched to me, but we’ll see.

While Netflix is planning to have the fourth season of the popular show launch later this year, the first volume of Black Mirror books is planned for arrival in February 2018, with the second and third volume of books being released in late 2018 and early 019 respectively.

So, if you’re a fan of the series and want to get even more stories based on its exciting and unique premise – you are in for a busy time both reading and watching the stories.

A man of many talents, but no sense how to use them. I could be discovering the cure for aids or finding ways to achieve world peace, but I’d rather be watching movies and writing here instead.

I wonder if the books will leave out a lot of the plot like most movies/ series do with books 😛
