Morpheus (1)

Somebody had to teach Neo Kung Fu (the painful way). Somebody had to teach you to not pay attention to the woman in the red dress and how rewrite the code of reality so that martial arts could be performed effortlessly while wearing the tightest of leather pants. But who was Morpheus before The Matrix? That’s the question that Warner Bros. wants to answer, as their newest stab at the trilogy that taught me to never trust a PC (including this one guys I think it’s watching me please send help) won’t be a reboot or a remake after all.

Originally portrayed by Laurence Fishburne in the original trilogy, Morpheus was the captain of the Nebuchadnezzar ship, a devout believer in the prophecy of The One and a bit of an outcast within Zion’s higher echelons. Hell, that’s the origin story that I want to see played out. According to BirthMoviesDeath the idea of a Matrix prequel is high on their agenda, with Michael B. Jordan being courted to suit up as Morpheus before he got wise to the fact that he was just a mere battery in flesh for his robot overlords:

According to two independent sources we’ve spoken with, one idea that’s gained a lot of support is a prequel film starring Michael B. Jordan as a young Morpheus.

It’s one of several ideas being floated around at the moment, but one that I’d dig to see explored. Mostly because a Morpheus origin story would be fertile ground for a back to basics approach for the Matrix. A direction that would rely more on the ground and camera-breaking martial arts of the original film and less on the uncanny valley CGI armies that plagued the sequels.

A Matrix continuation that combines mystery and purpose with ass-kicking? That’s the Matrix that I want to believe in, as seeing a young Morpheus awakened to the real world around him and watch him become the man of legend within those digital confines sounds like one hell of a spin-off. I don’t think The Matrix needs a reboot right now, as the core appeal of the first film was a mystery that nobody saw coming. With the cat out of that bag, it’s hard to find that lightning again.

Movies which explore the foundations of that universe however? More of that please. Hell, give me a sequel to the Animatrix even and I’ll be ready to plug back in.

  1. So I went onto the Entertainment page on Critical Hit scrolled down and the first post about a movie that isn’t a remake or part of an existing franchise that I found was The Dark Tower…which is still based on a book (but that’s fine because it’s not been done before)….which was two days ago. Are we really THAT inundated with bloody remakes and origin stories and latched on sequels and prequels just to coin in on a name that there’s barely a single new and creative movie out there?

The most original stories these days are coming in the form of series.
From a writer’s perspective, it’s more appealing to give your characters time to grow.
As an actor, it’s a steady job.
As a viewer, I love sinking my teeth into an awesome 10 hour story.

Absolutely. And to be quite honest I’ve bothered less and less with movies over the years. Series are just so much more interesting with such bigger story arcs and as you say, growing characters.

The best series these days are like long movies. Gone are the days when people just wanted episodical adventures.
          Now we want continuity.

Even something like The OA, which I recently watched on Netflix. So well put together, so well told. Emotional and involving…and although the end has the potential for another season, it didn’t feel as open-ended as some of the big blockbuster movies these days.

Too many movies these days are open ended. They always want a a sequel to create a franchise (thanks, Marvel!).
That’s why something like Arrival was some awesome for me. Stand-alone movie, great story, etc.
Too few like that these days.

Yea man. Oh, and the last point I want to make. I feel like movies these days have allowed storytellers to become lazy. They’re like: “well we can’t fit an explanation for everything in there, so let’s just let the story ride on coincidences instead”. I HATE coincidences in movies, it’s lazy and bad storytelling. If you can’t write a decently fleshed out story with plots that link up with each other practically without relying on coincidence you’re not a real writer.

Yeah, it is rather daft when they do that.
But we also gotta bear in mind that sometimes the scenes that explain certain things end up on the cutting room floor.

Dark tower is part of an existing franchise of books. The last film that had NOTHING to do with any form of entertainment was Pacific Rim and that was years ago already.

Yea. I mentioned that about Dark Tower, but it’s a brilliant series and have not been made into movies yet, so I think it’s welcome since many want to see it on screen. (Besides people raging that Idris is a black dude and it’s SO WRONG) Please. Idris Elba would make the best damn James Bond too if they’d just allow it.

No he wouldn’t. For my reasoning behind it watch Trevor Noahs stand up comedy Afraid of the Dark. 😛

Not a huge fan of Trevor Noah, but I saw it on Netflix. Might check it out.

Was not a great special but the Russian part and the James bond part was hilarious.

It could work…. Michael B. Jordan has potential, but a Morpheus-centric spin-off could only work if the Wachowskis are not involved. Those dudes are hacks! (yes.. yes.. I’m “misgendering” people again… blah blah! It’s not a real thing)

Yea. It’s becoming more and more appealing to return to anime. Luckily Netflix has some really good original stuff.

Saw the preview for it here on CH. Big Willy plays a cop, his partner is an Orc. Modern day setting with fantasy characters. Me likey.

            Oh, very interesting.
I think the only big one I’m really looking forward to is Valerian, but only because of the brilliant stuff that it’s based on

Seen the previews, it does look rather magnificent!
But to play devil’s advocate, don’t get your hopes up too much… So many adaptations from books/graphics novels fall short when they try to condense them into movies.
That’s why I’m so glad that they’ve made American Gods into a series instead. Way better!
