New trailer for Steven Soderbergh's Haywire

I am a huge fan of people hitting and kicking each other in the face. Especially when it’s done by professionals ala mixed martial arts. As such, I’ve been keeping a close eye on this one as it stars MMA superstar Gina Carano. She is the formerly #3 ranked 145-pound fighter in the world. And, might I add, pretty damn easy on the eyes.

Given her fighting ability and looks, it was only a matter of time before Hollywood came calling. That call came in the form of top director Steven Soderbergh (Ocean’s Eleven, Traffic, Contagion) as he created this action-espionage vehicle just for her.

The plot is one we’ve seen countless times before, but the fact that not only is there a talent like Soderbergh behind the camera, but that he has also surrounded Carano with a cast that is a veritable who’s who of talent, has me very optimistic about this one.

It also helps that it addresses a particular pet peeve of mine. You see, I’ve gotten very tired of Hollywood expecting us to believe that waifs with the Body Mass Index of a hummingbird (Angelina Jolie, please eat a cheeseburger then come on down!), can punch out men built like soviet human/bear hybrid experiments. Not only is Carano built like a woman should be, she really is capable of knocking out quite a few of us guys.

Haywire releases in the USA on 20 January and 30 March in South Africa

Is it just me or does this mark the first time in a while since we’ve heard the growly, 20-pack-a-day-voice used in a trailer?

Yeah, I am inclined to agree. Will do my full review over the weekend though.
