The upcoming Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is finally in full hype mode and is getting a lot of attention of late as Warner Bros and DC Comics look to kick-off their Justice League films and establish their cinematic universe. I’m looking forward to all the movies currently in development, especially the Wonder Woman and Aquaman solo films, but also the full Justice League movies as well. One solo film which is going to have its challenges set out for it is the planned Batman solo film that is also under development – currently being co-written by Ben Affleck himself who may also choose to direct it as well.

Batman v Superman takes place with the caped crusader alreadyhaving been crime-fighting for several years already, so it would be interesting to see in what direction they take the film. And it looks like, according to an interview Affleck had with EW, that the new film is likely to be a prequel showing how this rendition of Batman has built a reputation for himself and also his relationship with Robin – who is notably absent from the Justice League films, but whose old suit can be seen in the film (image below).

In describing the character, Affleck said that Batman in the current Batman v Superman film has a huge sense of failure and doubt in the role he has tried to play as a hero in the city of Gotham:

He’s projecting his own sense of failure, his own sense of disillusionment, his own cynicism onto Superman.

What caused Batman to feel this disillusionment is something we need to learn more about. It is believed that it is the Joker who is responsible for the writing that you see on Robin’s suit – so expect a solo film to potentially act as some sort of Suicide Squad prequel or crossover as well.

We’ll be exploring that. No one says specifically the name of which Robin that is.

It is early days for the films development yet, so expect many details to possibly change over time. Affleck is already confirmed for the next Justice League films as well as Wonder Woman and Suicide Squad, though is apparently still not 100% locked on this solo movie, though I’m sure it is something that he will pursue if the films are indeed a success:

It’s in development, and right now I’m really focused on finishing Live By Night. That’s where my focus is, and I tend to be a one movie at a time guy. So, when I’m finished with this movie, I’ll then focus on my next movie and figure out what that will be.

Affleck has also apparently already seen parts of the Suicide Squad film and had high praise for what he saw of it:

I’ve seen stuff from Suicide Squad, and I can tell you that movie really works. That movie is really, really cool and fun and awesome.

That’s good news to hear and from what we’ve seen so far, it certainly will be a fun movie and perhaps carry a different vibe from the much darker Batman v Superman film.

We have just had Christopher Nolan’s epic Dark Knight trilogy, which although very different from this DC universe that is now getting set up, set a high benchmark for Superhero movies and in particular the dark themes of the Batman world. I’m hoping that they find a way of telling the story that makes it fresh and doesn’t repeat too many of the same themes we are now familiar with

I’m certainly looking forward to these next few movies and hope it really lives up to the high expectations many fans will have for it.

A man of many talents, but no sense how to use them. I could be discovering the cure for aids or finding ways to achieve world peace, but I’d rather be watching movies and writing here instead.
