Noomi Rapace - The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo Photocall at Soho Hotel, London, England, 03/10/2010 --

Looks like when it comes to going to rehab, Noomi Rapace is saying yes, yes, yes! The Wrap is reporting that the Prometheus star has signed on to play the titular role in Amy Winehouse, an upcoming biopic about the late singer. This won’t be the first time that Winehouse’s life story makes it to the screen though, as the critically acclaimed documentary Amy was just released earlier this year.

Rapace shot to international fame back 2009 with her brave and brutal performance in the original Swedish-language The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo before making the jump to Hollywood with such titles as Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows and Prometheus. While you could never really fault any of her performances in her American filsm, most of them have been more blockbuster fare, not really giving her the depth of material to truly show off those incredible acting skills. This is however should definitely make up for that as Winehouse was certainly led a storied, sometimes controversial life.

The soulful and eclectic British singer-songwriter was already established in her native country, but truly broke out on the global stage with her second album “Back to Black” in 200 – specifically the no.1 song “Rehab” – which led to five Grammy wins and a slew of other awards at only 27 years old. But as her music kept breaking records and notching up one success after another, her personal life was a whole other matter entirely. Besides for her very untame public persona, she battled with substance abuse for years, with her drug problems often threatening both her career and health. And after many ups and downs, both personally and professionally, she eventually passed away due to alcohol poisoning in 2011.

Oscar-nominated Irish filmmaker Kirsten Sheridan (August Rush) has been tapped to set to adapt and direct this life story in the upcoming film for Lotus Entertainment, with executive producer Angus Sutherland offering this statement on the project.

“We are honored to be bringing Amy’s heart-breaking life story to the screen and to be working with such a gifted filmmaker as Kirsten Sheridan. After the huge success of documentary ‘Amy’ this year, audiences worldwide have been left with a compelling appetite to delve even deeper into the story of one of Britain’s most iconic soul singers – there is not a better actress to embody the complexities of this role than Noomi Rapace.”

Lotus Entertainment are currently in negotiations with Winehouse’s estate for the use of her music in the film, and lets hope they can actually pull it off as her music is such an iconic part of who she was as a person.
