Public complaints damn Lucifer to local TV hell

Lucifer (1)

Have you guys watched Lucifer yet? Surprisingly fun, right?! I’ve already written plenty about how torn I was with this new TV series adaptation of the long running Vertigo comic book of the same name. Torn because the adaptation takes all the sweeping epic mythological storytelling and world-building of writer Mike Carey’s longform narrative – and my favourite comic book story ever – and just ditches it all in favour of being yet another police procedural where some maverick character (in this case the Devil himself, having given up on being the ruler of Hell to open a jazz bar) solves crimes with the police every week.

But thanks to a ridiculously charismatic and effortlessly likable turn by Tom Ellis as Lucifer Morningstar, the show is incredibly fun to watch despite its conceptual shortcomings, leaving me confused to as whether to love it for it’s charms, or just hate it on blinkered fanboy principle.

If it’s the latter, I won’t be the only South African hating it though as Channel24 reports that after screening the first episode of the new show last week in SA, Namibia, Botswana and other African countries, local broadcaster MNet (DSTV) received a slew of complaints from the local conservative viewership about the show. One complainant wrote that “It is completely unacceptable to me that offensive series like Lucifer be televised,” while another went to say that “I would suggest that DStv contribute to the cultivation of this country and community and not break it down and let it fall into sin – from pornography to Satan worship. It is unacceptable to say the least.”

Another DSTV subscriber was so offended that they hinted at cancelling their subscription:

“DStv is broadcasting this series on Wednesday evening, that actively portrays Satan/ Lucifer as a hero to innocent people who might not know better. Has he succeeded in deceiving DStv and South African Christians, to believe that this is an innocent fable as well? In the meantime I cannot support DStv while they are actively spreading Satan’s word.”

Lucifer (2)

MNet had screened the first episode on last Wednesday at 19:00, which as some viewers complained, is supposed to be “family time”. And while MNet has not decided to yank the show off the air completely, it has acquiesced to at least avoid this potentially troublesome timeslot so as to not further offend its viewership.

“Due to the perceived sensitive nature of its content, we believe Lucifer is better suited for late-night viewing. While M-Net Edge is the much-loved home of edgy, provocative and highly acclaimed series, we continue to review our schedules to ensure that the content matches the timeslot.”

“The series Lucifer will move from its prime-time slot on M-Net Edge on Wednesdays at 19:00 to Fridays at 23:00 from this week onwards,”

Coincidentally enough, this new timeslot may actually be fitting to Lucifer‘s content as anybody who knows anything about TV ratings can tell you: Late night Friday is TV Hell. It’s basically a dumping ground where shows go to die, as relatively nobody is watching broadcast TV at that time. Which is actually kind of sucky, as Lucifer is a surprisingly enjoyable show.

As it is produced by US network FOX though, local viewership numbers will have about the same bearing on the lifespan of the show itself as a commission of inquiry into political corruption has in South Africa, but it has to be noted that Lucifer has already drawn ire overseas as well with American Family Associations’ One Million Moms creating an online petition against it (and we all know how effective internet petitions can be, right?).

Personally, I’m not the religious type, and don’t want to offend, but if you find this version of Lucifer so repugnant, you would probably have been stripping your Ford Cortinas to build rockets to knock the DSTV satellites out of the sky if the show had actually retained the original story, filled with gods from different pantheons, power-crazy angels, and Lucifer just being plain awesome.

Lucifer will continue airing on the Express From the US on Wednesdays at 02:00, and will get repeated in its new 23:00 timeslot as from this coming Friday.

I agree , if you don’t like it don’t watch it. However it makes controlling the stuff you would like your kids exposed to difficult if it is aired at a time when a lot of kids are watching television. I haven’t watched the show yet , but if it is true that lucifer is shown to be the hero and God the enemy , then it is pure poison to both christians and non christians.

it’s not poison to none christians at all.. IF I believe in a higher being then I’d rather follow the devil who allegedly opened up the humanity to knowledge and is the being behind rock and roll, sex, drugs, alcohol and everything else I enjoy in life

My mother had a “Burn it it is from the devil phase”.

Playing cards (with photos of trains on them not even naked ladies), wall tapestries from Turkey, my brother’s teddy bear, anything with a cross on it etc.

The church people that convinced her to do it, later stole a shit load of money from a lot people including my mother.

The same people organised pamphlets to be handed out at school that showed how karate and TMNT is from the devil.

My mother started the braai and burnt them because they were apparently the devils work. I never got to watch He-man as a kid either. Fun times.

You wanna hear something more tragic ? I got a cool He-Man Toy one year. Had it for a few days and as kids do, I took it with me everywhere. So, one night I went to the post office with my mom and was buggering around with the post intake slit and dropped it in there. My mom never even bothered to go back in the morning to get it back for me.

Just dumping a show to a later time does not kill a show. They did that to South Park and yet we still get to see the devil dress up as Britney Spears and having a super sweet 16 Halloween party (and have sex with Sadam) 😛

The show is good. Don’t agree with it then don’t watch it.

This just reminds me of that time Devildriver were on their way to South Africa, and a whole host of fans, including myself, were super excited. But, thanks to some people being “offended” (pretty much only by the name, with no context on it’s meaning or the band) they took our freedoms away, and the Devildriver show ended up being cancelled.

You then write a complaint to M-Net about said show because it doesn’t agree with your constitution and you don’t want others exposed to it because of the fear of possible influence?

This reminds me of a certain RAMFest…

This is an interesting one. Don’t Support DRM.

A TV show about the devil where the devil is taking a break from hell to fight and solve crime on earth. And the name of the show is right on the nose, lucifer.
The devil is portrayed in a nice way, charming, nice, with bad side to him. How we love the british accent. Just warms one heart, gov’nor.

Is the tvshow trying to weasle the devil into people’s hearts, making it easy for us to accept the devil because his a good guy in this tvshow.

South Africa. Strong cultural and religious practices and beliefs. Of course there will be complaints by South Africans about a devil character on tv portrayed to be a good guy while the kids watch and making them think that the devil is cool.

Now if they made a tv show called lucifer where the devil is bad fucking character and doing bad evil shit, with lots of fire, gore, death… and let’s not forget if you have a tv show about the devil you have to have God represented. Good vs evil. God vs devil. Yin yang.
I’m sure then less people would complain.

Don’t Support DRM. DRM is evil.

I asked her one day why she allowed it and she explained to me that she knew that I could discern the difference between entertainment and trusted that I won’t take up anything I see too seriously.
I think it’s religious nutters like these mentioned here that give religion in a general a extremely bad name (I can’t even start to imagine how many people have turned their backs on religion because of overly strict parents). Besides, we live in a world dictated by the choices YOU make, so if it really offends you that much… just don’t watch it!

In Supernatural, God is portrayed as not only absent, but they say some really “un-religious” things about him .One always understands that Crowley is bad, but he is freegin awesome. Right now in the new season, Lucy is portrayed as the only hope, but you still know he is bad. How people can think Lucy is “good” in this show baffles the mind though…he is helping because he find the detective intriguing and he is pretty much “doing what he wants”. Tomorrow, that might entail eating baby-entrails…but that is only my view based on the first episode. Coming from a super conservative upbringing – I still can’t understand the “I don’t like it you can’t watch it” mentality.

*Unless further episodes prove otherwise, I see none of this “glorifying Satan” the people are complaining about 🙂

I think DSTV are guilty of censorship to a certain degree. I have noticed, When I do watch movies on the Mnet channels, they are cut for time. Goodfellas was cut to shit when it aired some time ago. I specifically noticed it cause I love that film. On the other hand, the more recent broadcasts of Goodfellas was not cut. A editor mate told me it had more to do with time on air but my point was the very violent scenes were cut. Same thing with Casino.
