The Purge TV series won’t actually show any purging

The Purge movies have become somewhat of a phenomenon recently, not just because some parts of the films are genuinely terrifying, but because of the political relevance of its story as well. To the film’s credit, there is a lot more going on than just a bunch of people trying to kill each other and the writers have cleverly built the Purge around a strong political story which certainly adds to the onscreen thrill.

The concept is so popular that producers have decided to turn the Purge into a TV series. Considering that the purge movies are based around one single day of the year, it would be difficult to see how they would intend to focus an entire series on just the one day – and it turns out they won’t as the Purge TV series will instead be focusing on the other 364 days of the year and the politics around the purge. So says Jason Blum, who produced the movies  and is also involved in the television show, revealed (via Deadline):

It will reveal to the fans what happens the other 364 days of the year and how that law affects people.

Now that actually sounds quite boring. While the political story around the Purge is undoubtedly interesting, I can’t imagine entire series built around it. It appears that this TV series will resemble more of a political drama than a thriller about survival. Not sure I’m up for that. Hopefully, they will find ways to still keep the same horror elements of the movie in the TV series, which according to James DeMonaco, who wrote and directed all three Purge movies and will write, direct and executive produce the TV series, it just might:

The idea of why I like the idea of a maybe 10 hour TV thing on this, the one thing you really can’t do on the films is, just because of mere real estate and time, is you can’t get into the nuance and complexity that would drive someone to commit a terrible act on this night. Whether it’s revenge or out of passion, but what might be interesting in a TV show is with a flashback narrative, if you start on Purge Night but you go back to show how people have gotten to where they are. Where you see a couple that’s gone haywire on this night, but let’s show everything that’s led up to this moment of a husband trying to kill a wife — the cheating or the accusations of cheating or money problems. It will be interesting to show those arcs, those dramatic and complex arcs that get people to where they pick up a gun or a knife and kill someone else. I think there’s something cool that we can do with the real estate of TV — 10 hours, potentially.

That sounds a little better, but something which we will need to see more of before making any judgments. The TV version of The Purge doesn’t have a release date yet, but it’s expected to air on SyFy sometime in 2018. Enough time to purge this idea before they purge something else – the viewers.
