Read about the untold origin of Bane from THE DARK KNIGHT RISES

Unlike other films, Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy didn’t exactly faff around when it came to explaining the origins behind the villains that appeared. Actually, make that zero faffing, because there were little to no details on their origins, with Harvey Dent being the sole exception. The Joker was an agent of chaos, while Bane was a blunt hammer of bat-breaking action. Except that he may have actually had some backstory than was revealed in TDKR.

Speaking to GQ, costume designer Lindy Hemming talked about a scene that would have given viewers a glimpse into the early days of Bane, and how he came to be such a badass in a gasmask;

The thing that you should have seen during that sequence is [Bane] being injured in his youth. So one of the fundamental things about his costume is that he has this scar from the back injury.

Even if he hasn’t got the bulletproof vest on, he still has to wear the waist belt and the braces. In that scene in the prison, where he’s learning to fight the same way Batman learned to fight, he’s wearing an early version of his waist belt. It’s showing support, but it’s not the finished one he eventually wears.

He’s also wearing an early version of his gas mask, all glued together … If you look at the film, unless they’ve cut it—and I’m sure they haven’t—there’s a whole early section for Tom Hardy where he’s fighting and being taunted by people.

He’s got chains on him, and he’s standing on a wooden thing while people are attacking him. And in that scene, he’s wearing a much more ragged, primitive version of the mask.

And when Hemming was told that that scene did not make the following cut, she replied with the following;

Well that’s an awful shame, but I suppose you have to cut things. I won’t elaborate on it too much, because it isn’t in the film, but there was another section that showed you why he had the mask and where it came from.

As much as I would have loved to see Tom Hardy training with prison ninjas and rising to become the physical threat that he was, while timed to Eye of the tiger from Rocky 3, its easy to see why that scene was deleted from the final film, as it would have ruined a certain other spoileriffic moment, that we shan’t discuss here, for the few people who have yet to see TDKR.

Hopefully those scenes will make it into the DVD release, but meanwhile, here’s a look at the wounds Bane suffered from his early days in super-jail, via CBM and artist Sebastian Lochmann;

    They should not have cut it (and seemingly plenty of other scenes) from the film. The film edit is very disjointed. Hopefully the disk release will resolve that.

      I would kill to see that 4hr long initial cut of the film, because it did feel like we were missing scenes in places.
