SALT gets a new screenplay and writer for the sequel

Even though I find Angelina Jolie to be about as attractive as a car crash, the rest of the world still loves her. 2010 was a good year for the actress, as Salt proved to be a decent hit at the box office with its tale of a spy vs spy that she had a leading role in.

So when will Evelyn Salt return for the inevitable sequel? Well not anytime soon, as Columbia Pictures needs some more time to get the sodium requirements for their planned second film under control first. And that’s just what they’re doing, with a new screenplay from Becky “Seven years in Tibet” Johnson.

While Kurt Wimmer turned in a new screenplay for the sequel, the previous script that chronicled the further adventures of Evelyn Salt doing the spoileriffic CIA rounds most likely did not meet with Jolie’s approval. And that’s where Becky Johnson comes in, as she’s taking a stab at producing a sleeper agent thriller.

The recruitment of Johnson is an interesting one though, as she’s more well known for her work on more drama-heavy pieces, such as the aforementioned Brad Pitt starring Seven years in Tibet and The Prince of Tides. Could she balance fleshed out characters and a serious dose of action?

Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Sunil Perkash will still produce, but as of right now, Salt 2 still needs a director.

My theory: Wimmer’s script called for Angie to eat a cheeseburger or two. That’s why she rejected it.
