SA's Weekend Top 10 – Welcome to the HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA

Adam Sandler’s career is a little like the Eagles song: he checks out whenever he feels like it, but he never actually leaves. Then once in a while he shows us that while we criticise him, he cries himself to sleep in a giant bed made out of money.

Yup, Sandler is back with Hotel Transylvania 2, which debuted at the top spot. No real surprise there: it’s school holidays and parents are always looking for animations that will shut the kids up. Even forgettable stuff like Home did well over here. But animations don’t always last – Maya the Bee took a rather big six position drop from third to ninth. Guess who won’t be here next week…

Who else tumbled? Everest is down three spots to seventh, and Transporter: Refueled is also down three to tenth. The rest did a bit better. Comedies The Intern and Schuks! Pay Back The Money both dropped two places. Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials slipped only one spot and The Perfect Guy held on to the middle ground at number five.

Outside of Hotel Transylvania it’s been a week of disappointing debuts. The Martian came in at only third, but it may make that up as word gets around. Straight Outta Compton arrived at a disappointing sixth, but it may also prove to have some legs.

  • 02. MAZE RUNNER: THE SCORCH TRIALS (incl 3D)
  • 03. THE MARTIAN (incl 3D)
  • 04. THE INTERN
  • 05. THE PERFECT GUY
  • 06. STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON
  • 07. EVEREST (Incl 3D & Imax)
  • 08. SCHUKS! PAY BACK THE MONEY

Who are the week’s departures? Vacation leaves the charts after just three weeks – that’s one worse than Transporter: Refueled. Self/Less managed a very poor 9th spot arrival last week and is already gone. It’s an utter failure overall. Finally, local comedy Die Pro only held on for two weeks before bowing out.

Meanwhile Schuks: Pay Back The Money gained another million to its total tally of just over R14 million. That may sound impressive, but it it is clearly slowing down.
