Sean Penn is hunting Nazis while rocking, in this trailer for THIS MUST BE THE PLACE

Guys, relax! That’s not an aging Edward Scissor-Hands that you see before you! That’s Sean Penn, decked out in eyeliner and ready to rock your town, as his band arrives to…

Oh wait, he’s washed up and a mere former shadow of himself? And he’s playing a character in This Must Be the Place that has a similar backstory (Zing!)? Okay then. So what’s a former rockstar supposed to do with his spare time? Why, hunt Nazis of course.

It certainly is a strange approach that Penn has taken with the character, as you’d expect some sort of mental maniac that throws televisions sets out of hotel rooms, instead of a low key, quiet man with a naive approach to life. Or he’s pulling another Sam I Am moment and going for broke at the Oscars once again. We’ll have to wait to see whether this works or not, but it most certainly does look intriguing.

The film also stars Frances McDormand and Judd Hirsch, and is due out in western theatres on November 2.

Cheyenne, a wealthy former rock star (Penn), now bored and jaded in his retirement embarks on a quest to find his father’s persecutor, an ex-Nazi war criminal now hiding out in the U.S. Learning his father is close to death, he travels to New York in the hope of being reconciled with him during his final hours, only to arrive too late.

Having been estranged for over 30 years, it is only now in death that he learns the true extent of his father’s humiliation in Auschwitz at the hands of former SS Officer Aloise Muller – an event he is determined to avenge. So begins a life-altering journey across the heartland of America to track down and confront his father’s nemesis.

I kid you not. In the still image used for that video, with the glasses one, Sean Penn looks exactly like a slightly whiter version of my gran’s sister in law, complete with the crazy hair and bright red lips.
