SHOOTER setting its sights on television

Remember Shooter, the 2007 action thriller starring Mark Wahlberg? I do, I remember watching it… and that’s about it. Well it’s being reported by Deadline that Paramount TV and Wahlberg are teaming up to adapt the movie, which was based on the 1993 novel Point of Impact by Stephen Hunter, into an action-drama television series.

For those of you who can’t remember the plot that served to move a whispering Mark Wahlberg and his confused scowl along a path of bullets, Wahlberg starred as Bob Lee Swagger, a retired Marine sniper, living in isolation in the Rocky Mountains after a failed mission in Ethiopia that resulted in the death of his partner. He is tracked down by Colonel Isaac Johnson (Danny Glover) to assist in preventing the assassination of the US president by a sniper, but in the course of doing so is betrayed and set up for the assassination of the Ethiopian Archbishop, who was on tour with the president. Wounded and the subject of a massive manhunt, Swagger has to fight to prove his innocence and foil the plot of those who betrayed him.

Don’t feel bad, I didn’t remember it either. The movie has only garnered a 48% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but with an 80% audience approval rating – pretty much in line with what I recall, it was an enjoyable action movie but not very memorable.

The show is set for the TNT Network which is home to shows like Falling Skies and The Last Ship, which are entertaining action shows but ultimately quite shallow when it comes to the characters and plot – pretty much like the movie. There is however one bit of news which leads me to hope for a little bit more from this show – its being written by John Hlavin who was a story editor and wrote a couple of episodes of The Shield (best cop show ever! not The Wire), and will also executive produce along with Wahlberg and Stephen Levinson (Boardwalk Empire). There’s no word as yet regarding directors or actors attached to or being sought for the show.

This is the latest television series adaptation of movie properties by Paramount TV following the recent announcements of The Minority Report, Shutter Island and School of Rock all being in development. Are there any other Paramount movies you’d like to see adapted for television? I’d watch the hell of out a Derek Zoolander action-comedy show.

  1. Funny story, I told my sister about this last night & her reaction was a blank expression. Then I told her it’s the MW action movie where he’s a sniper and her response was, “oh yes, I watched that… don’t remember what it was about.”
