The Teen Choice Awards happened this weekend past, and while there Gary Marsh – Disney Channels’ President and Chief Creative Officer  – spilled some info about the upcoming Tron:Uprising. For those of you unfamiliar with Uprising, announced nearly 2 years ago, this is going to be an animated series that bridges the gap between the original 1982 Tron film, with it’s 2010 sequel, Tron: Legacy.

The show is slated for a June release but according to Marsh we’ll be getting a few snippets before then.

“We’re taking a 10-part micro-sode approach, which will begin airing three-minute pieces in April.”

This is of course the same approach that was originally taken with the absolutely amazing first Star Wars: Clone Wars TV series on Cartoon Network. Uprising will also make use of a combination of traditional 2D techniques as well as 3D animation:

“[Tron: Uprising will] offer a revolutionary visual aesthetic that is really going to help redefine the kind of animation that you can do on television around the globe. And luckily, we’ve been able to use the same writers, the same producers, and some of the same vehicle designers, who’ve created the images for the feature film, in the series.”

He also shed some light onto the show’s story and exactly where in the timeline it fits in:

“What’s happened is that Tron has been badly injured by villainous Clu, but he has found a protege, a brilliant young mechanic, who is another program like himself, named Beck and voiced by Elijah Wood, who TRON decides he is going to train to be the next TRON.”

This is one of the few western animated shows that I’m really looking forward to watching. I’ve always been a big fan of the Tron world, and barring some poor script niggles, I really enjoyed Legacy for what it was: The greatest Daft Punk music video that the world has ever seen.

To get you in the spirit, here’s the initial announcement trailer for Tron: Uprising:
