The Batman V Superman box office forecast is tracking under projections

There’s a lot of pressure riding on Batman V Superman: Just Juice right now. Massive amounts of star power, excessive special effects and a marketing campaign which would leave small nations close to a junk rating from Moodys make this movie a massive gamble for Warner Bros. It’s not just that Batman V Superman has to lay the groundwork for a Justice League movie, but that it also needs to justify those hundreds of billions of dollars spent on it (Boy it certainly feels like it! Gosh!).

Its been reported that the tussle between a dickish Kryptonian super-god stuck on Earth and a brooding billionaire psychopath who threatens to rip the penises off of mouthy talk show hosts will need to have a box office run that earns close to a billion dollars to be considered a success. That’s not impossible, given worldwide markets these days, as the bulk of that hopeful profit will probably come from European and Chinese markets.

But how is Batman V Superman going to fare on homeground, in the US of A?

Batman-V-Superman-Supes.jpg

According to Deadline, advance ticket sales for the Batman brouhaha point towards a domestic opening weekend of between $100-$140 million. That’s not bad at all. It is however slightly under projections from Warner Bros., who were aiming for a higher opening weekend considering that the film would be playing over the Easter holidays. Those forecasts also put it under the previous March titan, The Hunger Games, which made over $152 million on opening weekend.

For another comparison, Man of Steel earned over $116 million on opening weekend, although you’d imagine that seeing Superman come dangerously close to having his fist lodged in Batman’s reinforced skull would draw in a bigger crowd. Batman V Superman will probably still be a big hit, but it’s going to be a big fight to break a billion dollars on the way to the bank.

yeh but star wars was released 2 weeks before the premier but BvS has released 4 weeks before the premier. Also the release of star wars tickets was publicised by news corps, i ain’t heard anyone announce the release of these tickets except the cinema’s themselves so despite there being no publicity and the tickets being released 4 weeks before the premier 54% is blooody amazing

No way. We bought our Star Wars tickets for December 18th on October 24th. That’s almost two MONTHS before the movie opened, not weeks.

What does it change? It’s about interest and final numbers not about how fast the tickets are sold,

Oh and I just looked at the other links right there, in the right. There’s ‘phenomenal’ and ‘Captain America’ in the same line.
        Explained it is.

I wasnt aware that WB had released projections for the movie…cause they havent and your using your ass as your mouth and your scrodum for your brain. 100-140 opening weekend is awesome (while i think it will do much much more) Considering every mcu movie except the avengers 1 and 2 and im3 grossed under 100 mil OW. And again, the budget for this movie was 200 mil, with 200 mil marketing , which is common for these movies, they make a lot of it back from product placement, tax incentives, turkish airlines.

And deadline released those projections weeks ago ahead of the advanced ticket sales…how are you a journalist or whatever you call yourself. The 100-140 is a baseless estimate made by rival studios. But you know, good for you.

Actually this movie has a budget of around 400m. For comparison, the original Avengers film was 220m.

No way DoJ is being produced for less than MoS, which had a $220m budget itself. Look up the latest articles; they all say the budget is upwards of 350m.

No…that makes no sense. You don’t make a movie with more actors and more special effects and bigger run time on a lesser budget. Think for a second.

          • Drunk_Kent

            March 2, 2016 at 00:22

Macho mans right the film cost 220-250mil to make, warner confirmed they would be spending a further £200mil on worldwide marketing but most of the marketing money has been recouped already with merchandise, sponsorship deals with brands and early ticket sales

          • Axxell

            March 2, 2016 at 00:28

Like I said…You don’t make a bigger movie without spending more money…it’s financially impossible.

          • BR

            March 2, 2016 at 00:36

WB frontloaded a lot of their costs with MOS, so it’s plausible that BvS would not cost a whole lot more. Also, they licensed the movie out the wazoo, so they’ve already got a lot of their money back (according to the article in Forbes).

          • Axxell

            March 2, 2016 at 00:45

But you’re talking about them recouping the money; I’m talking about the budget for the film itself.

          • BR

            March 2, 2016 at 00:51

Fair enough, but all we have to go on are the official figures provided by the studios… which are likely to be underestimates in all major tent poles (regardless of studio). So based on the official figure BvS is not much more expensive than MOS. Similar to claims that AOU didn’t cost much more than the first one.

Ultimately, there probably isn’t much of a point arguing about it, seeing as how most of these figures are garbage!

          • Axxell

            March 2, 2016 at 08:01

Usually they’re pretty reliable, and the estimate for this movie makes sense considering all the personnel they’ve gathered and what they’re trying to do.

          • BR

            March 2, 2016 at 15:51

Yeah but the official figure is not much higher than MOS…

          • Axxell

            March 2, 2016 at 16:19

How would you know? Since there’s no official figures, we can only estimate, and there’s nobody better at doing that, than the people close to the industry, who are saying the budget is $400m.

The answer he linked from Google is actually sourced from Wikipedia, which actually sourced it from this April 2015 article on Hollywood Reporter:

            http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/superman-batman-dcs-real-battle-792190

But if you check the latest articles from the last couple of months, you’ll see them saying the budget balloned (as one of them put it) to $400m.

I didn’t say HR was the one who gave the increased budget; I said HR was the source for the $200m estimate, which as I pointed out, is an older article than the ones stating the budget has increased.

Further, the pre-sales are actually off of the charts indicating a take of around $200M. Finally, this just appears to be written by a dick-wad who hates both Superman and Batman. Look, we have already seen an underhanded and stupid attempt to smear BvS through a twitter campaign. It appears this article is just more of the same. It’s really easy to see people opinions in their article haha! A casual Disney marvel film fan probably wrote this. Marvel fan writers have been bashing this for months and I don’t understand why since a dc movie being really good will only force marvel to up their game and stop being cheap with all their movies. Shoot in film and use real effects instead of shooting digital and going straight to full animation every time ironman fights someone.

From the onset of the article you can see the bias of the writer. Next time you are going to write an article try not to show your colors. I hope others see what I am referring too. Good night.

I’m honestly surprised – normally Batman v Superman articles are filled with people whining about how it’s going to be the worst movie ever. Suddenly we’re inundated by experts in movie sales predictions.

Is there a hidden super secret Batman Vs Superman forum where all the fanbois gather prowling for article they do not like and once found they rally to attack it with all their might or fury.

Or is this like free roaming pack of internet trolls left homeless after the closure of the News24 comment section.

You might be right about his bias, there was set of videos Darryn made where he dresses as Spiderman and burns Batman effigies when he reviewed the Dark Night movies.

I have a hard time undestanding why people are so bad in expectations about this movie. I mean, we’ve seen 3 trailers plus some ads so far, which, combined, make it for 10 minutes of shooting. 10 minutes!!! The movie is 2:30 long! And we’re going to see lots of Cyborg, some Aquaman and Flash and Wonder Woman is key in this film. Why people think it’s gonna flop? Because Man of Steel was a really great film but…it wasn’t what they expected (like anyone really knows what to expect from Superman)?

And that’s the point of what I’m saying and I’ve always said: people think of Superman whatever they want as much and they conceive God the way the want. Some people see god as a clerk that gives them for a little price whatever they want and when he doesn’t, it means there’s no God. Some people expect Superman – yes, he’s clearly the representation of God – to be a warrior, but also witty, fair and kind. You can’t balance all these things together specially not for a movie carachter who’s rising above a world of imperfections in his context.

“… it also needs to justify those hundreds
of billions of dollars spent on it.”

Hundreds of billions? Where did you get that figure from? What source can you cite that credibly reports that “hundreds of billions” of dollars have been spent on BvS?
This is something you just made up, which makes you a liar. As reported in Forbes, a respected business publication, the actual expense of the movie is this (from the article by Mark Hughes):

“Batman v Superman is a huge financial investment for Warner,
with a budget north of $200 million (although tax incentives helped
offset a good portion of that). Marketing costs worldwide are going to
approach $200 million as well. So when you see articles asserting a $400
million price tag for the film, that’s what they’re talking about. Of
course, tie-ins and pre-sales helped Man of Steel pocket roughly $200 million before it even hit theaters, so expect similar numbers for Batman v Superman
in that regard, which helps further offset some of the costs. For now,
just remember these tax incentives and tie-ins and such, and we’ll get
    back to them shortly.”

You can read the rest of this long, detailed and data-supported analysis of how BvS is likely going to be a rspectable success here : http://www.forbes.com/sites/markhughes/2016/02/19/relax-fans-batman-v-superman-wont-flop-despite-rumors/#670bef0a70bb

What you did here was a dishonest, ugly bit of snark. It reeks of resentment; you’re jumping on a pathetic bandwagon of anti BvS haters, in fact. You are willing to ignore facts and make stuff up just to propagate a trend that is ugly, hateful and vulgar. Shame on your lying soul.

You have FAILED to detect the humour in this article.

On this site, there is NO ONE a bigger Batman fan than the writer.

Even the Batman of the Week internal competition is regularly won by him. I mean he LITERALLY has his own bat-suit. (I have seen this, with my own eyes, much to my dismay)

So, calm down, have a coffee, and read some of his other crazy articles. Or, if you are interested in proper JERNALIZMS, you can read Geoffrey’s articles

Everyone is looking forward to CW, so I’m sure people will pass on this fiasco. Batman and Superman are not hot commodities globally as well. No one outside America cares about Batman or Superman anyway. Add Ben Affleck and Zack Snyder who are both incompetent movie makers into the mix and you have a massive failure in your hands. DC cannot compete with Marvel both financially and artistically. Marvel can never make mistakes, all of their movies are prime examples of perfect films. I think CW will be the first CMB to hit the 2 billion mark and get nominated for 4-5 oscars including best motion picture. This wreck of a production on the other hand will make $200-220 million domestically to a total of $500-$550 million. JL movie won’t happen and WB will have to restart the whole franchise by recasts and firing Snyder. There won’t be a DC movieverse until the mid 2020s.
