THE WOLVERINE gets it's Viper and an official synopsis

James Mangold’s The Wolverine has rapidly entered an almost berserker state of activity with new updates popping up every other day now. One such update that popped up during Comic Con, and was then promptly sliced right back down again was the casting of Jessica Biel as the villainous vixen Viper (say that three times fast!).

With Biel not taking the role further than the negotiations table, it left a gap in the cast which needed to be filled soon to catch up to the production, and it looks like Svetlana Khodchenkova is just the person to do it.

Word broke via the film’s Facebook page that the relatively unknown 29-year old Russian Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy actress had officially landed the role. In the comics Viper, the one time head of terrorist organization HYDRA, is a formidable hand-to-hand combatant and strategist who has had a complex history with both Wolverine and the other antagonist in this film, the Silver Samurai.

We’ve yet to see Khodchenkova tackle anything physical on-screen, so her martial abilities are still in question. But hey, we live in a world where Keanu Reeves knows Kung Fu, so I’m not worried about that part too much.

Along with the news of the casting, an official synopsis for the film has also finally been released, hinting at the classic Frank Miller storyline that the film takes its inspiration from:

Based on the celebrated comic book arc, THE WOLVERINE finds Logan, the eternal warrior and outsider, in Japan. There, samurai steel will clash with adamantium claw as Logan confronts a mysterious figure from his past in an epic battle that will leave him forever changed.

The Wolverine will be popping his claws through our screens on July 26, 2013.
