Have you ever played Mafia? No, not the video game, I’m talking about the party game Mafia, sometimes also known as Werewolf. It’s a fantastic little game that I’ve played extensively both online and in the real world, as all you really need are a few playing cards, a games master with a flair for storytelling and some willing players. Alcohol occasionally helps as well.

I won’t bore you with all the rules and nitty gritty of it, but will say that Mafia is a game about paranoia, bluffing, being sneaky, employing detective skills, and, oh yeah, it’s totally not something that could ever be turned into a movie. Ever. At least that’s what I thought until I stumbled upon this trailer over on /Film.

It would appear that over in Mother Russia (which is where the party game originated from) not only did somebody have the bright idea to make a movie based on Mafia, but they had the bright idea to make a movie based on Mafia… set in a dystopian Tron-like sci-fi future with sharks and plane crashes and virtual reality fights and good lord, did these people ever even play the game?!

Check out all the WTF-ness in the trailer below.

“Mafia” is an action thriller, based on the famous interactive survival game – Mafia. The action takes place in the distant future in Moscow, Russia. Mafia game is a world-wide phenomenon, now the most popular television show ever. Every year, eleven fearless volunteers, from all walks of life, gather together to find out – who are the innocent civilians, and who are the ruthless Mafia. A game, that the outcome of which determines who will live, and who will die. Those who die are hunted by their worst fears, in elaborate and horrifying ways, while the whole world watches in rapacious awe. There are only two ways out, to win and become wildly rich and famous, or to lose and vanish forever into the abyss of your nightmares.

/Film insists that this is not a fan-made parody trailer but a 100% real, totally legit movie with a budget of $10 – 25 million that will actually be making it’s film festival debut next month. I still don’t believe it. I need to see this for myself (preferably in Russian with English subtitles because sitting through an entire movie’s worth of that horrible English dubbing will make me punch myself in the gonads) before I will be convinced that this actually exists. What do you guys think?

Looks interesting – a little convoluted as a trailer, but there might be a good premise there…
