…for awesomeness, that is!

Now while I feel that the first chapter in The Hobbit Trilogy was the weakest of all of Peter Jackson’ Lord of the Rings film thus far (it managed the feat of feeling both bloated and also not having enough to it at the same time), it was still the best time you could have with dwarves without having to visit Darryn and his family.

As such, I was really looking forward to the next chapter (which also contains all my favourite bits), and looking at this new trailer, it looks like it delivers in spades. Tolkien purists though may want to avert their eyes for fear of committing elficide.

The second in a trilogy of films adapting the enduringly popular masterpiece “The Hobbit,” by J.R.R. Tolkien, “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” continues the adventure of the title character Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) as he journeys with the Wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and thirteen Dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) on an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor.

So apparently elves are all fans of the Batman style of scene entrance then? And maybe it’s just me, but somehow the visuals on this movie look better than on An Unexpected Journey, which shouldn’t be the case since they were essentially done at about the same time. Could that much polish have been applied in the interim?

We’ll soon see how the love affair angle between Orlando Bloom’s Legolas (of course he had to baseball slide into the scene!) and Evangeline Lily’s not-found-in-the-books wood elf Tauriel plays out, but as somebody who doesn’t believe that adaptations are supposed to be be verbatim copies, I have no problem with her inclusion in principle. Plus, it certainly seems like she’ll be holding her own on the ass kicking front.

And then there’s Smaug! I know it’s silly, but I really want to hear that dragon talk. Benedict Cumberbatch’s dulcet rumble of a voice is just perfect a choice and I can’t wait to see/hear him in action.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug will jumping into cinemas from treetops on December 13, 2013.
