As both the erstwhile Man With No Name and Dirty Harry, Clint Eastwood certainly knows a thing or two about shooting. But the movie veteran is doing some shooting of a different kind as he once again moves behind the camera to direct American Sniper, a movie about – what else? – shooting.

The true story stars Bradley Cooper as Chris Kyle, the deadliest sniper in US military history with 160 confirmed out of 255 claimed kills. Kyle is a legendary soldier with quite the life story, one that unfortunately ended in tragedy last year when he and a friend were shot and killed at a shooting range by a fellow marine veteran who was apparently suffering from PTSD.

But Kyle leaves behind an indelible legacy, not just as a soldier but also as a husband and father who took an honorary discharge to rather be with his family, all of which gets highlighted during one super-tense sniper scene in this first trailer for the film.

U.S. Navy SEAL Chris Kyle is sent to Iraq with only one mission: to protect his brothers-in-arms. His pinpoint accuracy saves countless lives on the battlefield and, as stories of his courageous exploits spread, he earns the nickname “Legend.” However, his reputation is also growing behind enemy lines, putting a price on his head and making him a prime target of insurgents. He is also facing a different kind of battle on the home front: striving to be a good husband and father from halfway around the world. Despite the danger, as well as the toll on his family at home, Chris serves through four harrowing tours of duty in Iraq, personifying the SEAL creed to “leave no man behind.” But upon returning to his wife, Taya Renae Kyle (Sienna Miller), and kids, Chris finds that it is the war he can’t leave behind.

American Sniper also stars Sienna Miller. It is scheduled for limited international release on December 25, 2014 and hits local screens on January 23, 2015.

It looks like they really drew hard on the dramatic elements of the book, of which there aren’t all that many. I’m curious if they’ll also include his training and time with GROM. But hopefully they’ll have the beach ball scene 🙂
